To the average American car buyer, the name F150 is most commonly associated with the bestselling half-ton pickup from Ford but as of today, the racing world connects the name to the newest Formula 1 race car from Team Ferrari.

The new Ferrari F150 will compete in the Formula 1 series for the 2011 season and while the name may seem odd to American consumers, the F150 name was chosen by the folks at Ferrari to celebrate this year’s one 150th anniversary of the unification of Italy. The Ferrari press release mentions that the Tricolore Italian flag design will appear in the livery of the new F1 racer but at today’s debut in Maranello Italy the Ferrari F150 was adorned in the familiar red-and-white scheme. However, a shot from the rear reveals the Italian flag spread across the middle section of the large rear wing so every time the new Ferrari F150 blasts past another driver, he or she will know that they have been passed by an Italian racer.

Ferrari President Luca di Montezemolo had this to say about the debut of the supercar makers latest race car:
“Ferrari is an expression of Italian excellence, talent and creativity. All the men and women who put so much effort and passion into their work at Maranello share the pride and responsibility of representing our country around the world and it is in this spirit that we chose to dedicate this car to an event that is so important for the whole of Italy.”

Upon hearing about the new Ferrari F150 paying homage to the 150th anniversary of the unification of Italy, Italian President Giorgio Napolitano expressed his appreciation and wished Team Ferrari luck in the 2011 Formula 1 season.

The new Ferrari F150 Formula 1 race car will make its grand debut on March 11th at the Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix.
