V6 vs Turbo: Next-Gen 2024 Toyota Tacoma Fans Speak Out

Work for Torque News, follow on Twitter, Youtube and Facebook.

Toyota Tacoma fans are torn over what engine they prefer for the next generation.

May 19th.

That is the date of the big reveal. The special day when we get to see what Toyota has been building and perfecting these last several years.

The 2024 Tacoma.

2024 Tacoma Release Date

We were given the reveal date of May 19th last week, the latest of several teasers designed by Toyota to help us learn some details up until this point.

May 19th is only 12 days away.

So far we have been teased with the i-FORCE MAX engine, new Trailhunter trim level, TRD Pro and FOX suspension system, JBL Flex portable speaker system, LED headlights and taillights and light bar, potentially two new colors, six-speed manual transmission, and Toyota Audio Multimedia.

2024 Toyota Tacoma Engines

Most Toyota Tacoma trucks are equipped with the trusty 3.5-liter V6 engine that produces 278 horsepower and 265 lb.-ft. torque. This one lasts practically forever and has adequate power.

However, Tacoma fans and enthusiasts seem to be in agreement they would hope for both more power and better gas mileage with this next Tacoma 2024 design.

The question is, how to do that.

Stay with the tried-and-true but underpowered V6, or go with turbo technology?

This is a tough one, and this choice has Toyota Tacoma forums mixed and torn.

Fans Comment on 2024 Toyota Tacoma

I asked the “Toyota Tacoma Enthusiast” Facebook forum (nearly 83,000 members) what their preference would be, and their answers were unsurprisingly scattered on both sides of the argument.

Stay with what has worked for a long time, or go with the more efficient and shinier new toy?

Andrew added. “Turbo 4. V6’s aren’t good at anything, no power, no torque, and no mpgs.”

“V6 turbo duh.” Commented Maxwell.

Tammy and Mike said. “N/A V6 for longevity. Not too sure how long turbos will last and I’m sure it’s very costly to replace.”

Wayne had a good suggestion. “Bring back factory option super chargers.”

“Turbo for sure. Not for the power, for the noises.” Said Jason.

I’ve had 2 V6 Tacoma Trd sports package since 2012. Have a small farm. I’ve never experienced a power issue. Pulled stumps pulled peanut wagons loaded with4 tons of peanuts. Don’t know what you folks are trying to do that say it is underpowered. O ly complaint is the mpg. I hate to hear Toyota is going to the turbo. Will be nothing but trouble with less pulling power. Turbo is no good at slow speeds.

I'll take the V-6 any day. I had a 2003 Tacoma with a TRD supercharger and it was a rocket! I wish a V-8 was available. These little 4 cylinders with turbos won't last long.

Always liked Toyota for reliability and longevity. Turbos are NOT reliable! Extreme heat, from exhaust gases, are for racing engines not long term reliability! i was expecting a 5000 lb. towing capability, from the new Tacoma hybrid, with a naturally aspirated 4 cylinder! Do this and i will buy one. Go strictly turbo and I will go elsewhere ( along with many other loyal Toyota customers) Your reliable hybrid systems have brought you many customers, not turbochargers- bad mistake!!

Agreed with what you said about turbos. I have owned 3 tacomas and now am looking at Nissan Frontier since it is the only truck with a regular 6 cyl. engine.

Also not a fan of the turbo, it's just not possible for a turbocharged engine to last as long as something that's naturally aspirated.

Turbo or not turbo, I don't care, The moronic electric parking brake is what concerns me to the point of no, thanks. So glad to be old.

Also the moronic variable valve timing, Ford refers to it as timing/cam phasers. Both have an oil pressure solenoid that diverts oil to the twin cam timing gears, they have a spring loaded plate that the oil pressure forces in and allows the timing tear to advance the cam timing when accelerating. If that doo dad (has a roll pin through plate and gear) fails or breaks or the oil solenoid fails, you destroy the engine. All vvt engines do this (atkinson method). Like Ford you start hearing a tapping noise like a lifter tick or a noise like wooo wooo wooo before they break. $1200 labor just to replace one side. I wish auto mfg would push back on the govt horsesht causing all this ignorant “engineering”. Old school advanced spark timing with a $3 weight and spring in the distributors, hot rodders put in custom weights and weaker springs to make it advance faster, more power, better mileage..for $7.

I was going to give my son my 2020 Tocama but I just found out that they are going to put a '4-banger' in it, and changed the body style. I am NO longer a Toyota fan and in fact my son and I are looking at Jeeps for the both of us. Nice job Toyota ........
