Important New Feature Coming to 2022 Toyota 4Runner

Learn about the new 2022 4Runner feature that will help drivers in many ways. Here is how to get it.

One of the most asked about features is finally coming to Toyota 4Runner for the 2022 model year.

This is not a year for a 4Runner redesign, and it is also not going to be a year when Toyota 4Runner is refreshed.

However, there will be a new feature that 4Runner fans have been asking about for years.

Call me excited.

Toyota 4Runner and Blind Spot Monitor

I reported last month that blind spot monitor will be available on the all-new 2022 4Runner TRD Sport. Buyers can get this feature, along with rear cross-traffic alert, with the optional Technology Package.

Technology Package is new for 4Runner this coming model year.

Now, information is being reported this week from multiple online sources that blind spot monitor will also be offered standard on several 4Runner trim levels.

Blind spot monitor and rear cross-traffic alert are a package deal and go with each other here.

How to Get 4Runner Blind Spot Monitor

Look for blind spot monitor and rear cross-traffic alert as standard equipment on four different 2022 4Runner grades.

Toyota 4Runner SR5 Premium, 4Runner TRD Off-Road Premium, 4Runner Limited and 4Runner TRD Pro are the lucky trim levels.

It reminds me of Toy Story where the crane game prize creature says, “I have been chosen.”

Technology Package on 4Runner TRD Sport gets you blind spot monitor also.

No word on if other grades like SR5 and TRD Off-Road will offer these upgrades optionally or not.

2022 Toyota 4Runner Release Date

Official 4Runner retail sale time frame is not available yet.

What I can guess is that we should start seeing 2022 Toyota 4Runner SUVs at dealerships across the country sometime in later September into October.

The ongoing vehicle shortage could impact dealer supplies as well. Not many people have any real idea when this critical situation will alleviate, and when buyers will begin seeing more inventory “on the lots.”

This is a challenging time for consumers, for dealerships, and for manufacturers. I personally cannot wait until vehicle supplies begin increasing again.

Time for Your Toyota 4Runner Comments

Hey 4Runner fans, these questions go out to you. I would love your opinions, as I can use this feedback for future stories.

Do you think the addition of blind spot monitor and rear cross-traffic alert will impact your willingness to buy a new Toyota 4Runner?

Are there any other features you feel 4Runner should have, or that you would like 4Runner to have (at least as an option)?

When Toyota 4Runner finally gets redesigned, what engine and transmission do you think would be optimal?

I'm waiting for a '22 specifically for BSM and RCTRA. I sold my '16 SR5 last month.

I really, really wish that Toyota would include seat memory positions on other trim levels besides the Limited. It's 2021 and even most economy vehicles have this option on all trim levels. I don't want a Limited, however, my wife is over a foot shorter than me so it would be great to have it!

Along the same lines the dual climate control should also be in at least the Premium trim levels.

Adding those features to the current generation wouldn't even be hard as they already exist in the Limited, however, Toyota is just being stubborn and won't do it which is incredibly frustrating.

Beyond those gripes though I'm happy with the 5th Gen and can't wait to get my '22 ORP w/ KDSS. I just wish I could actually order one soon here as being down to one vehicle is kind of a pain when I have no idea when I can even order a replacement.

Question...can I actually order a 4Runner (non-Pro) exactly how I want it configured through any dealer?

Blind Spot Monitoring? Seriously?

And here I thought it might be that the 4Runner was finally going to break the 20mpg barrier...

'Been 16 yrs now for this 5th gen but I'll be willing to trade my 2016 (40 kms) if they offer 6 or more gears...

2021 and still stuck in the dark ages when it comes to economy. Engine has power but needs more torque. Transmission shifts too many times when using cruise control, especially radar activated. Mine can't figure out gear it likes.

I can’t believe the 4Runner still doesn’t have a power lift gate! The ONLY negative thing I have to say about them. I’m on my 4th one. Love the Limited!!

I agree 100% about the power lift gate. Just traded a Acadia Denali and bought first Toyota 4runner. Looks like everyone has power lift gates but Toyota. Which is a big deal when you get older and my wife is short which makes the manual lift gate even more challenging.
