How American Are The New Subaru Outback And Ascent SUVs That Are Made In The US?

Where are Subaru vehicles made? The 2020 Subaru Outback and Ascent SUVs are made in the U.S. but how American are they? The answer may surprise you.

The 2020 Subaru Outback, Ascent, Impreza, and Legacy are all built at the Subaru plant in Lafayette, Indiana but how American are they? The 2020 American-Made Index: Which Cars Are Most American? list is out from Cars.com and the answer may surprise you.

Since 1994 the American Automobile Labeling Act requires automakers to include content information on vehicle labels for cars and trucks produced for U.S. sale. According to the most recent 2020 document, the four Subaru models made in Indiana aren’t all that American after all.

How American are the Subaru models you drive?

The 2020 Subaru Outback wagon and Impreza sedan and 5-door compact each have just 45 percent U.S. content. The 2020 Subaru Ascent and Legacy have a bit more U.S. content at 50 percent each. All four models import their major drivetrain parts, engine, and transmissions from Japan.

The 2020 Subaru Outback, Impreza, and Legacy all have 40 percent of its parts shipped from Japan. The Ascent 3-Row family hauler has 30 percent of its parts coming from Japan.

The number one selling Subaru model is the 2020 Forester. The Forester compact SUV, 2020 Crosstrek subcompact SUV, WRX and WRX STI performance cars, BRZ sports coupe, STI S209, and Toyota 86 are all built at the Japan plant and have 0 percent U.S. parts.

Subaru Indiana Automotive (SIA) makes 35 percent of Subaru's total vehicle global output. Subaru of America is the Japanese automaker’s largest market by far, selling 671,000 vehicles of its total 1.06 million worldwide in 2019. Since beginning production in 1989, the U.S. plant has increased its output from 67,000 to approximately 370,000 Subaru vehicles annually.

Last year,  Subaru Indiana Automotive hit a big milestone and produced its 4 millionth Subaru vehicle, an Ice Silver Outback wagon. The popular model rolled off the assembly line on Monday, April, 22.

Where do the Outback, Ascent, Impreza, and Legacy rank with other cars on the American-Made Index? The 2020 Subaru Ascent is number 72, 2020 Legacy (73), 2020 Subaru Outback (75), and 2020 Impreza is number 76 on the latest list.
