What are the best new compact cars for roominess, cargo room, and interior comfort? A new report says the 2022 Subaru Impreza is one of the best picks for shoppers. See why you can't buy one now.

With surging new car prices, there are good choices for shoppers looking for a new compact car that’s roomy and comfortable. Recent tests by Consumer Reports (by subscription) have identified seven compact cars with the roomiest and most comfortable interiors for 2022. CR's top picks also offer good performance, fuel efficiency, affordability, and top safety scores.

Consumer Reports' seven top-rated new cars are picked for shoppers for ease of access, cargo, and comfort tests. CR says the 2022 Subaru Impreza is the top pick with a score of 81, Nissan Sentra in second (77), Hyundai Elantra third (74), Volkswagen Jetta fourth (73), Toyota Corolla fifth (73), Honda Civic sixth (70), and Mazda 3 seventh (69).

Beyond roominess, interior comfort, and cargo space, CR's scores are based on road-test performance, owner satisfaction surveys, predicted reliability, crashworthiness, and standard safety features.

2022 Subaru Impreza sedan and hatchback

CR says the 2022 Subaru Impreza "Knocks it out of the park with the current Impreza sedan and hatchback, now among the top-rated cars in the compact class. The Impreza wows us most with its quiet cabin, roominess, and user-friendly controls, and its ride comfort puts some luxury cars to shame."

Consumer Reports ranked the 2022 Subaru Impreza number one of twelve compact cars.

What is the price of the 2022 Subaru Impreza?

Subaru kept pricing the same for the 2022 model year except for a small increase in the designation and delivery fees. The 2022 Impreza comes in base sedan ($19,755), base hatchback ($20,255), Premium sedan ($23,155), Premium hatchback ($23,655), Sport sedan ($24,555), Sport hatchback ($23,955), and Limited hatchback ($27,355). Destination and delivery ($960) are included in the prices above.

What is the fuel mileage of the 2022 Subaru Impreza?

Consumer Reports says they achieved 30 mpg overall and 21/41 city/ highway mpg with the sedan body style, "commendable given the standard all-wheel drive." The 2022 Impreza is also offered in a sporty hatchback body style.

Can you find a 2022 Impreza?

Shoppers looking for a 2022 Subaru Impreza will have difficulty finding a new model. The microchip shortage and supply chain issues has limited production, and Subaru has stopped manufacturing the current model for 2022.

What should customers do if they want a new Impreza compact sedan or hatchback? It's now best to wait for the 2023 Impreza sedan and hatchback. If you are willing to wait, the Subaru Impreza will get a complete redesign for the 2023 model year. It will come with new safety technology, new exterior styling, possibly a more fuel-efficient 1.5-liter turbocharged engine, and new cabin upgrades.

Consumer Reports says the 2022 Subaru Impreza is a top pick for compact-car shoppers for its roominess and interior comfort. The next-generation 2023 Subaru Impreza should grow slightly in size and have added value for compact car buyers. Stay tuned.
