What are the best affordable small hatchback models with plenty of cargo space, have all-wheel-drive, and get excellent fuel mileage? iSeeCars says of the all-wheel-drive hatchbacks currently on the market; there are three best models; the 2022 Subaru Impreza, Mazda3, and Volkswagen Golf R. Which is the best you can buy now?

iSeeCars says the 2022 Subaru Impreza is the best hatchback, with an overall quality score of 8.9. The Impreza scores highest in reliability (8.0), retailed value (8.7), and gets a top safety score (9.0). The average Impreza new car price is $22,845, and the average 3-year-old used car price is $23,916.

Why is the used car price of the Impreza more than a new model? Because of supply chain issues, new models are in limited supply, and low mileage used Impreza pricing reflects the nature of the used car market today.

The Mazda3 is the second-best hatchback and has an overall quality score of 8.7. The Mazda gets a reliability score of (7.5), retailed value (8.6), and receives a top safety score (10.0). The average Mazda3 new car price is $26,950, and the average 3-year-old used car price is $23,051.

The Volkswagen Golf R does not qualify for an iSeeCars Quality Score. The average VW Golf R new car price is $43,645 to $44,445.

What sets the 2022 Subaru Impreza apart?

The 2022 Subaru Impreza is made at the Subaru plant in Lafayette, Indiana, and comes standard with all-wheel-drive. The hatchback offers 20.8 cubic feet of space behind the rear seats, and folding them down opens up 55.3 cubic feet.

iSeeCars says, "the Impreza is the most affordable AWD vehicle available and is considered among the best AWD cars on the market because of its quality and value. It's also efficient, with a combined mpg of 31 with its CVT transmission."

What is the Impreza fuel mileage?

The EPA says the 2022 Subaru Impreza hatchback gets 31 mpg combined city/highway and 28/36 city/highway mpg in the non-Sport CVT trims. The Impreza hatch with the 5-speed manual gets 26 mpg combined city/highway and 24/31 city/highway mpg.

What is the price of the 2022 Impreza?

The 2022 Impreza comes in base sedan ($19,755), base hatchback ($20,255) Premium sedan ($23,155), Premium hatchback ($23,655), Sport sedan ($24,555), Sport hatchback ($23,955), and Limited hatchback ($27,355). Destination and delivery ($960) are included in the prices above.

What's coming for the 2023 Impreza?

If you are willing to wait, the Subaru Impreza compact sedan and hatchback will get a complete redesign for the 2023 model year. It will come with new safety technology, possibly a more fuel-efficient 1.5-liter turbocharged engine, and a new cabin design. New models should arrive in early 2023.
