2022 Subaru Outback, Crosstrek, Forester Outsell Impressive Number Of New SUVs

How do the 2022 Subaru Outback, Crosstrek, and Forester stack up in sales against the most popular SUVs? The three Subaru vehicles outsell some impressive SUV competition in the first six months of 2022. 

It’s the six-month point in the 2022 sales year, and we can get an idea of how well Subaru's SUV lineup with the 2022 Subaru Outback midsize SUV, Crosstrek subcompact SUV, and Forester compact SUV stack up in sales against the most popular SUVs. The 26 best-selling SUVs in 2022 include the Outback at number twelve, the hot Crosstrek is number fifteen, and Forester, the twenty-third top-selling SUV in the first six months of 2022.

The Subaru Outback is Subaru of America’s best-selling model and outsells an impressive number of the competition. Outback outsells the Ford Escape, Toyota 4Runner, Hyundai Santa Fe, Ford Bronco, Kia Telluride, and others.

  

The 2022 Subaru Crosstrek is the Camden, N.J. automaker’s second best-selling model, and outsells an equally impressive number of popular SUVs. Crosstrek outsells the Toyota 4Runner, Ford Bronco Sport, Hyundai Santa Fe, Ford Bronco, Kia Sportage, and Kia Telluride.

The 2022 Subaru Forester is Subaru of America’s third best-selling model and outsells the GMC Terrain, Kia Telluride, and Honda Pilot. 



What sets the Subaru SUVs apart from the competition?

Apart from 8.7 inches of ground clearance and standard all-wheel-drive, the Outback, Crosstrek, and Forester come with X-Mode for added all-weather performance. Outback XT and Wilderness, Crosstrek Sport and Limited, and Forester Sport and Wilderness come with dual-function X-Mode for additional all-terrain performance.

Fuel mileage

With gas prices above $4.00 per gallon for regular unleaded, Outback, Crosstrek, and Forester get excellent fuel mileage.

2022 Subaru Outback fuel mileage

The EPA fuel mileage rating of the 2022 Outback XT 2.4-liter turbo is 23/30 city/highway mpg and 26 combined mpg. The estimated fuel economy of the standard 2.5-liter engine is 26/33 mpg city/highway and 29 combined mpg.

The EPA says the new 2022 Outback Wilderness gets an estimated 22/26 city/highway mpg and 24 combined mpg. The 2021 Outback XT with the 2.4-liter turbocharged engine gets an EPA estimated 23/30 city/highway mpg and 26 combined mpg.

2022 Subaru Crosstrek fuel mileage

The 2021 Subaru Crosstrek with the larger 2.5-liter Boxer engine comes with 30 more horsepower and gets an EPA estimated fuel mileage of 27/34 city/highway mpg and 29 combined mpg.

The 2021 Crosstrek with the 2.0-liter four-cylinder Boxer engine gets an EPA estimated 28/33 mpg and 30 combined mpg.
 
2022 Subaru Forester fuel mileage

The 2021 Subaru Forester compact SUV comes with standard all-wheel drive and gets an EPA estimated 29 combined mpg and 26/33 city/highway mpg. The Forester comes with a 2.5-liter four-cylinder Boxer engine.

It’s been a challenging year for Subaru and other automakers to have enough new vehicles to sell to their customers. Even with the microchip shortages and supply chain issues, Subaru has produced enough 2022 Outback, Crosstrek, and Forester SUVs to outsell an impressive number of the competition from Toyota, Ford, Honda, Hyundai, and Kia.

What’s next for the 2023 Subaru Outback, Crosstrek, and Forester? The 2023 Subaru Outback gets a partial remodel and arrives this fall in U.S. showrooms. The 2023 Subaru Crosstrek remains unchanged except for a new special edition trim level and comes this summer. Subaru has not announced the 2023 Forester, but it should arrive this fall with no changes. Stay tuned.
