No Way the New Tesla Roadster Has 620 Miles of Range - What the Range Will Most Likely Be and More

The New Tesla Roadster is not going to have 620 miles of range - especially after seeing the Cybertruck range numbers. It's more likely going to be this number - plus other things the New Roadster will have.

New Tesla Roadster Range

Tesla states that the New Tesla Roadster will have a range of 620 miles, a top speed of 250 miles per hour (or more), and a 0 to 60 mph time of 1.9 seconds. This would put it at Tesla's fastest and longest range vehicle ever produced. However, I don't think it will have 620 miles of range.

The New Roadster will have some things going for it. It will be produced with maximum aerodynamics and with a light weight. It will have two motors (all-wheel drive), according to the online purchase page at Tesla.

The New Tesla Roadster was unveiled about 6 years ago now - it is the longest running revealed Tesla product that has not yet entered production. It will likely have wraps for it - my favorite being the black matte wrap.

Elon Musk has also said that the New Roadster will have an add-on package for a SpaceX rocket that will allow the New Roadster to hover a few feet in the air and go 0 to 60 mph much faster than 1.9 seconds. Most likely, the time would be 1.3 to 1.4 seconds with this package.

The SpaceX rocket would make the New Tesla Roadster a two-seater, taking out the back seats in favor of having the SpaceX rocket on the back.

What Will the Range Be?

Tesla has clearly shown that their priority is not trying to get range too much over 300 miles. However, the Model S Long Range is still listed at a maximum of 405 miles, which is pretty good range for an EV. This model in the existing inventory costs $72,460 - which is out of reach of most people still.

I see the range of this vehicle inline with the Model S Long range, at about 400 miles of range. This may disappoint some people, but if you follow Tesla's philosophy, range beyond 300 miles of range isn't that necessary. 400 miles of range is almost overkill to Tesla's philosophy of range.

Speaking of batteries - battery costs will decline over the years, but one question remains. Will those batteries also improve in performance over time? It remains to be seen.

Still, this car will be lightweight with Tesla's latest batteries and be super aero-dynamic, so 400 miles of range seems reasonable. I don't think there will be any variants of this vehicle besides, with or without the SpaceX rocket.

I expect the New Roadster will use the 4680 batteries from Tesla and have steer-by-write capability. The kWh battery for this vehicle will be around 90 miles usable (with around 100 kWh total).

It can't have too big a battery because that will put extra weight on the vehicle, lowering its ability to accelerate quickly. That is the main draw of this vehicle - it's fast acceleration - not having a super long range.

Besides steer-by-wire, it should also have a 48-volt architecture and an incredible sound system - perhaps surpassing the Cybertruck's epic sound system.

It's been about 6 years since the New Roadster reveal (Dec. 14, 2017), and it's about time for Tesla to get this vehicle in the hands of customers - hopefully before the compact car!

Musk has a well worn history of over promising and under delivering. Additionally, Tesla's track record tells me that any new technology is likely to be released before it's adequately tested and likely to be dangerous. Company backing of defective products is unlikely. The good news is that if this is ever released it will be years past Musk's projections.
