Toyota RAV4 Prime Owners Report their Shocking Real MPG

See what gas mileage real RAV4 Prime owners are getting. It may surprise you.

One of the most intriguing Toyota models I have run across in the last several years is RAV4 Prime.

There are several reasons that make it appealing to buyers. It could be the 302 total horsepower, or maybe the 0-60 time of just 5.7 seconds (one of the fastest vehicles Toyota produces).

To me, I find fuel efficiency the most interesting benefit of purchasing one.

At face value you could look at the 38 miles per gallon combined and walk away unimpressed. But this number is only when using gasoline without electric power in the least. This is unrealistic and not how you would want to utilize your Toyota RAV4 Prime.

When taking advantage of the electric motors, this MPGe (gasoline plus electricity) jumps up to a strong 94MPGe. Also, drivers can travel up to 42 miles while solely in electric mode.

Owners Comment on RAV4 Prime

I went to the Facebook forum “Official Toyota RAV4 Prime Group” in search of realistic and real-world fuel economy numbers. Some of these 11,000 RAV4 Prime owners and fans take their efficiency very seriously, so I knew I would get beneficial feedback.

Anthony proclaimed. “I get 62 mpg lifetime in my R4P (RAV4 Prime) given my mix of electric and gas driving.”

“Most recent real mpg, calculated after a full tank of gas… 1981 miles on 11.5 gal….(topped off, as I always do) = 172mpg overall. Two months of driving.” Thanks for the great report, Bonnie.

Randy commented on his findings. “In EV mode / ECO I usually get a range of 55-60 miles in warmer weather. My miles-per-KWh is about 3.8 to 4.3. Highway mileage in HV / ECO mode is easily 38 to 45 mpg.

Matt has an amazing story to tell about his Toyota RAV4 Prime. “180 ‘MPG’! It’s not really fair because I drive 40 miles round trip to work 5 days per week, all electric. Then use the other car for long trips. But still – 180 MPG! (Going for 200, stay tuned…)”

Actually Matt, this seems very fair for you to use those figures. This is one way to smartly drive your RAV4 Prime to take advantage of the great electric range (for the size vehicle it is). Especially with your shorter commute – that is huge, and I am impressed and happy for you.

Great car, coming up on three years old. I use hybrid mode at speeds over 50 mph, lifetime average is at 73mpg. Only downside is the JBL audio system is not very good that's also not the end of the world. Loaded XSE purchased at MSRP which still hurt but we all know that's considered a good deal.

Three years old next month lifetime average 73mpg. Loaded XSE paid MSRP which is painfully considered a deal. Great car except for JBL audio system.

Hi, I have a feeling some of these high mpg figures include miles traveled in all-electric mode. Not that there's anything wrong with that, as more all-electric miles generally translate into lower per mile cost & emissions. Still, it'd be nice to see the breakdown of all-electric vs hybrid efficiency for each of these, as Randy has done, stating 3.8-4.3 miles/kWh and 38-45 mpg. Coincidentally, I'm getting similar numbers, just with two separate different vehicles: 4.3 miles/kWh in a MINI Cooper SE & 38.2 mpg in a hypermiled Subaru BRZ.
