Toyota needs to drum up excitement for the aging model. Will this model be enough to get you pumped?

The Toyota 86 has always been a sports car for driving enthusiasts, but it gets a new 86 Hakone Edition that pays tribute to what Toyota says is a great driving road in Japan called the Hakone Turnpike. According to the Japanese automaker, it should be on every driving enthusiast’s bucket list before they check out. If it’s worthy for a car to be named after, it must be a great road to drive. But what is so exciting about this new rear-drive coupe?

The new second-generation sports coupe won’t arrive until sometime next year and we are guessing this is another way for Toyota to keep interest in the coupe up for another year. The next-generation Toyota 86/Subaru BRZ has been confirmed and Toyota needs to drum up some extra excitement for the aging model in its last year of existence.

Here are the details

The special edition model gets exclusive Hakone green paint outside along with 17” twisted spoke bronze wheels, tan leather and black Alcantara interior, and a black spoiler. It also gets some special tan trim, tan stitching, black stitching accents, and a tan Toyota 86 logo is embroidered on the passenger-side dashboard. It will also feature a unique premium trunk carpet with an embossed 86 logo.

What’s missing?

Toyota and Subaru need to upgrade the flat-four Boxer engine in the rear-drive sports coupe and this special model gets no engine upgrades. The 86 Hakone Edition gets the standard GT trim options with a choice of six-speed manual or automatic transmission. Sports cars fans will have to wait another year for more power in the 86/BRZ sports coupe.

The big news is, everyone that purchases an 86 Hakone Edition will receive a pair of tan key gloves and folio cover with a de-bossed 86 logo and black stitching. The 86 Hakone Edition is based off the 86 GT trim level ($29,355) so we are guessing pricing will be well over $30K for the new model. The 2020 Toyota 86 Hakone Edition will be available sometime next year. Are you excited?
