Subaru Gets 3 Big Hits And A Few Strike Outs For New Models This Year

The 2023 Subaru Outback, 2023 Ascent, and 2023 Legacy are big hits for the new model year. But the automaker struck out with some models. Here is what's coming for U.S. customers.

Subaru of America hit a few home runs for three of its 2023 models and also had some strikeouts. The 2023 Subaru Outback, 2023 Ascent, and 2023 Legacy are big hits for the Camden, N.J. automaker. They all received significant improvements over the outgoing models.

The Outback, Ascent, and Legacy are made in Subaru's plant in Lafayette, Indiana, and all get a refresh with upgrades in styling, safety tech, and interiors. All should be a big hit with new car shoppers. The Impreza, in need of a remodel, also made in the U.S. plant, is a strike out with no new upgrades.

Subaru Impreza Turns 30-Years-Old - It Now Has An Identity Crisis

The 2023 Subaru Forester and 2023 Subaru Crosstrek are manufactured at Subaru's plant in Gunma, Japan, and are also strikes outs for the 2023 model year. Both are carry-over models with no improvements over the outgoing models.

The Subaru Crosstrek and Subaru Impreza have now seen two years with no changes. The Subaru Forester has one year unchanged from the previous year's model. Forester and Impreza sales are dropping, while Crosstrek is now the number-one-selling model in the lineup.

Why did Subaru choose to have so many carry-over models?

Subaru blames it on global supply chain issues and microchip shortages. But other automakers found a way to bring out all-new models and improve their existing ones.

Subaru has always been conservative in its new model changes and has not affected sales until now. But it's a new era with automakers retooling their entire lineups and switching to EVs. Subaru has the new all-electric 2023 Solterra compact SUV, which will help the Japanese automaker when it finally arrives. But will it be enough?

Here are the new models for U.S. customers. Click on the red link for more details on each newly-upgraded model.

2023 Subaru Outback

The Outback gets new upgrades with a redesigned front fascia and exterior cladding, the latest version of EyeSight safety technology, and a new wide-angle mono camera. Subaru also updated the Outback's multimedia system with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The 2023 Outback Onyx Edition is now available with the 2.5-liter naturally aspirated Boxer engine.

What is the price of the Outback?

The 2023 Outback now comes in nine trim levels for U.S. customers; the base trim is priced from $29,620, Premium ($31,920), new Onyx Edition with a 2.5 liter engine ($34,720), Limited ($36,520), Touring ($41,070), Outback Wilderness ($39,670), Onyx Edition XT ($39,820), Limited XT ($40,920), and Touring XT ($43,520). Pricing includes $1,225 destination and delivery fees.

2023 Subaru Ascent

The 2023 Ascent 3-Row family hauler, in the fifth year of its life cycle, receives a refresh with new features and upgrades for U.S. customers. Starting with the outside, the 2023 Ascent gets a new look with redesigned front and rear elements.

Ascent gets a new front fascia with a more prominent grille, new LED headlights, and a redesigned front bumper cover. Subaru of America says the new front bumper cover features new lower-edge air ducts to improve aerodynamic flow under the vehicle. At the back, Ascent gets updated Konoji (C-shaped) taillights.
New safety technology

Ascent gets the latest version of EyeSight driver assist technology with a Wide-Angle Mono Camera.

What is the price of the Ascent?

The Ascent base starts at $35,120, and Premium trims begin at $39,180. The Ascent Onyx Edition starts at $42,520, the upper Limited starts at $42,820, the new Ascent Onyx Edition Limited is priced at $47,520, and the top-trim Touring has a starting MSRP of $49,420. Pricing includes destination and delivery fees ($1,225.)

2023 Subaru Legacy

The Legacy midsize sedan gets new updates with a redesigned front fascia, the latest version of EyeSight safety technology, and a new wide-angle mono camera. Subaru also updated Legacy's multimedia system with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The refreshed 2023 Subaru receives a new front fascia, a more prominent grille, and redesigned LED headlights.

What is the price of the Legacy?

The 2023 midsize sedan starts at $25,415 for the base trim, Premium ($27,715), Limited ($32,465), Sport with new 2.4-liter turbo engine ($34,915), and Touring XT ($38,715). Destination and delivery fees are included in the pricing above ($1,020).

The 2023 Subaru Outback, 2023 Ascent, and 2023 Legacy should be home runs for new car shoppers. The 2023 Crosstrek, 2023 Forester, and 2023 Impreza are carry-over models. Customers may want to wait another year for upgrades on these models.

I want to know when will Subaru bring back a GT version of the Legacy? All well and good with some new bells and whistles but enthusiasts want a performance luxury sedan. Something Subaru used to be great at. People are always oggling over my 2011 Legacy GT and I still get offers to buy it on a regular basis.

We are anxious for delivery of our new Outback but it has been sitting on the lot at our dealership along with other Subarus with a software problems for almost 3 weeks. We NEED the car NOW and have no idea when we will take delivery.

The recall notice cleared up the week of the 20th we picked our new Outback up last Saturday. There was a no sell order due to the SOS systems not working. Call your dealer there’s no issue now. If they tell you there is get the car from another dealer.

Keep hearing rumors about a Subaru pickup.
Seeing some artists renderings online.
Any truth in what I'm hearing/seeing?

Saying a car is a strike out because there aren't any changes is such a wasteful mind set. We should applaud car companies who make cars that are good enough to go multiple years without changes and put a stop to this blatant wastefulness.
