The 2019-2020 Subaru Ascent is now involved in two separate recalls. Get the complete details here.

The 2019-2020 Subaru Ascent models have been recalled by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and Subaru of America for two separate issues involving the 3-Row family hauler.

The first Ascent recall is for a defective drive chain that may break, causing loss of power. The number of potentially affected Ascent vehicles is 160,941. Here are the complete details.

Subaru and the NHTSA have recalled the 2019-2020 Ascent and the 2020 Subaru Outback, and 2020 Legacy for a defective drive chain. The NHTSA says the drive chain may break, causing a loss of drive power and could result in an accident. The Ascent uses the new 2.4-liter turbocharged engine and the Outback XT and Legacy XT trim levels.

The second recall for the 2020 Subaru Ascent models is for tie rods that may separate from the housing, causing a loss of steering and could result in an accident. The potential number of vehicles affected is 1,305 models.

What is the problem?

Due to an incorrect tapered hole in the housing, the front tie rod ends may not fit properly. The improper fit can result in the tie rods and housings being deformed during assembly and service replacement if excessive torque is applied.

Other 20219-2020 Ascent recalls

The 2019 Subaru Ascent now has eight recalls, and the 2020 Ascent models now have four recalls. Some previous recalls involve the automatic transmission, the driveshaft, missing spot welds, and fuel pump failure. You can get more Ascent recall details here.

What should Ascent owners do for the two new recalls?

Subaru retailers will replace the left and right front tie rod ends and housings, free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed on February 7, 2022. 2019-2020 Subaru Ascent owners may contact Subaru customer service at 1-844-373-6614. Subaru's number for the first recall is WRK-21. Subaru's number for the second recall is WRL-21.

Owners can also check Subaru's VIN, lookup tool, and check for the latest updates.

My wife was killed in an auto accident in May 2021 while driving her 2019 Subaru Ascent. During the police investigation/accident reconstruction, the Missouri State Pollice asked Subaru to unlock their "black box" with all the car info for the past 30 minutes. Subaru refused and to this day have offered no reason for not unlocking the black box. Sounds very suspicious to me.

Very sorry for your loss Wally. Were there skid marks on the ground? My 2019 Subaru Ascent locked up its wheels and slid down a wet, 60mph, undivided highway with no warning at all. Almost killed my entire family with loaded logging trucks barreling by us.
I think you may have had a similar issue.
Could you contact me?
Thank you,
Oliver

I love my Ascent but these constant transmission recalls have me concerned about future issues past my warranty time. I know they will give a grace period but I feel like this is going to bite me in the ass in the future.

My wife Subaru Ascent 2019 64,000 miles left her with an incapacitated vehicle in the wilderness, eventually made it to a dealer who diagnosed a transmission head failure who said it not related to the chain recall (not repaired yet dealer does not have the parts). Wonder about the not related and if anyone else had the same issue

I'm having trouble with my 2020 Ascent. It hesitates and squeaks while I'm driving. The dealer said they can't find anything wrong with it and that it may have something to do with the recall that they don't have a solution for at this time.

I just had my 2020 Ascent in for a recall transmission update and ended up needing a new transmission. Wondering if anything else will go wrong? Should I trade it in?

The mileage was 61000, the transmission was replaced and after 250 miles on that transmission power was lost again contacted SOA. They promised a call tomorrow morning 19 May 2022 . This is the 4th lost of power and a month without the Ascent. So it goes.
