With surging new car prices, there are good choices for shoppers looking for an affordable new compact car under $25 000 this fall. Recent tests by Consumer Reports (by subscription) have identified eight safe cars offering good performance, fuel efficiency, reliability, safety, and affordability. CR picks the 2022 Subaru Impreza as the best pick for new car shoppers.

The eight top-rated new cars by Consumer Reports for shoppers are the 2022 Subaru Impreza, with a top score of 81. The Nissan Sentra is next (77), Hyundai Elantra (76), Toyota Corolla (73), Volkswagen Jetta (73), Honda Civic (70), Mazda 3 (69), and Nissan Versa (62).

The 2022 Subaru Impreza sedan and hatchback are rated number one of twelve compact cars by Consumer Reports.

CR's scores are based on road-test performance, owner satisfaction surveys, predicted reliability, crashworthiness, and standard safety features. The 2022 Subaru Impreza is now the top model, picked for its quiet, roomy cabin, user-friendly controls, ride comfort "that puts some luxury cars to shame," and standard all-wheel-drive.

What is the fuel mileage of the 2022 Subaru Impreza?

Consumer Reports says they achieved 30 mpg overall and 21/41 city/ highway mpg with the sedan body style, "commendable given the standard all-wheel drive." The 2022 Impreza is also offered in a sporty hatchback body style.

The EPA says the 2022 Subaru Impreza gets 31 mpg combined and 28/36 city/highway mpg in the non-Sport CVT trims. The 2022 Impreza 4-Door sedan with the 5-speed manual gearbox has the same fuel mileage. Also standard on Limited trims are High Beam Assist and Steering Responsive Headlights.

The 2023 Subaru Impreza is a carry-over model with no changes. All 2023 Subaru Impreza trim levels get a $550 price increase, including destination and delivery fees.

The seven different models come in base sedan ($20,815), base hatchback ($21,315) Premium sedan ($24,215), Premium hatchback ($24,715), Sport sedan ($25,615), Sport hatchback ($25,015), and Limited hatchback ($28,415). Destination and delivery ($995) are included in the prices above. Models with a CVT automatic transmission add around $1,300 depending on the trim level.

If you are willing to wait, the Subaru Impreza will get a complete redesign for the 2024 model year. It will come with new safety technology, possibly a more fuel-efficient 2.0-liter engine, and a new cabin design.
