2013 Ford Fusion packs driver assist features previously only found on expensive luxury cars

Not very long ago, maybe last week, there were no affordable family sedans with a driver alert system. Nor were there any with lane assist. A buyer would also have been hard pressed to find one with both adaptive cruise control and blind spot/cross traffic alert. The new 2013 Ford Fusion will pack all of this and much more into an family sedan within reach of those shopping for a moderately prices family sedan. No exact word yet on prices, but in a press statement Ford says these types of features had previously been available on luxury cars costing twice as much. By making these features available on the new Fusion, Ford will be bypassing the Hyundai Sonata, Honda Accord, and Toyota Camry and starting offer features only found on cars like mid-level Lexus and Mercedes sedans. This will likely make buyers of the competition take a look at Ford. However, it begs the question, “Why does Ford need Lincoln?”

2013 Ford Fusion Features.
The new 2013 Ford Fusion will come in a variety of trims and pricing is not yet released. Like the current Hyundai Sonata, the Fusion will only come with a 4 cylinder power plant. The choices will be slow, boring, hybrid, and turbo. Buyers looking for 6 cylinder power can still shop the Accord or Camry. However, the new driver assist packages offered by Ford may lure some buyers. Here is a succinct list of the driver assist features that can be had by checking off the right boxes Starting with the most impressive:
- Lane Keeping System – This system helps keep the car going down the highway in its own lane. It looks ahead using cameras. If the system thinks the driver is starting to drift out of a lane it will vibrate the steering wheel. If the driver continues to text or do whatever they were doing that kept them from driving, the system steers the car back into line.

- Driver Alert System – This system detects a vehicle that is displaying the telltale signs of a sleepy driver using a camera looking ahead. It uses a series of alerts such as a coffee cup icon to tell the driver to shape up or take a break.

- Pull-drift compensation – Have you ever been driving on a road with a steep crown that forces you to steer to compensate, just to keep the car going straight? This system does this for you.

These next features are pretty well known so we will simply list them: Adaptive Cruise Control, Back-up camera, Active Parking Assist, blind spot alert with cross traffic assist. By themselves these are not that unusual, but offered on an affordable car with the features above really makes this car a breakthrough. Ford realizes these are not for everyone and wisely is making them optional to keep costs under control for drivers who just want a good practical car without the new technology.

The 2013 Ford Fusion will bring a new level of driver assist features to the very competitive family sedan market.
