The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has announced a voluntary recall of almost 98,000 General Motors crossovers from the 2011 model year, including the Chevrolet Equinox, the GMC Terrain and the popular Cadillac SRX over concerns of safety belt failure in the event of an accident.

In the 97,843 GM crossovers recalled for this issue, it seems that the front safety belt anchors can crack over time and should the vehicle be involved in an accident, these cracked safety belt anchors could let loose; greatly increasing the likelihood of injury. The statement from the NHTSA doesn’t go into much detail but it does point out that this cracking and possible seatbelt failure may affect both the driver and passenger safety belt anchors. There is no mention from the NHTSA of accidents or injuries stemming from this recall.

General Motors plans to commence with this crossover recall on or before January 18th, 2011 at which time the owners of these 97,843 vehicles will be asked to bring their Equinox, Terrain or SRX back to the dealership where the safety belt anchors will be inspected and modified as needed. This work will be performed free of charge and for more information, owners can contact the automaker via www.GMOwnerCenter.com.
