Subaru’s Safest Car According To A New U.S. News Report, But It’s Been Discontinued

What is Subaru’s safest car? According to a U.S. News report, the 2023 Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid is the safest now. There’s only one problem: it’s been discontinued by Subaru.

Subaru is known for its top safety scores for all its models, but which all-wheel-drive vehicle is the safest? U.S. News Autos says it’s the 2023 Subaru Crosstrek Plug-In Hybrid. As I reported previously, the Crosstrek trim level has been discontinued

Check out the safest new models from U.S. News Autos, and then I will let customers know what’s coming next for the Crosstrek.

What does U.S. News say about the 2023 Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid.”

“The Subaru Crosstrek isn’t the fastest small crossover – far from it. Its meager 148-horsepower drivetrain returns an EPA-estimated 90 MPG equivalent, however. When the electric power is depleted, the hybrid Boxer four-cylinder engine and all-wheel-drive setup return a combined 35 mpg. The battery can be recharged in five hours using a household power outlet or two hours using a Level 2 public charging station.”

2024 Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid view of the wheel

“Subaru emphasizes the safety benefits of its Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive, but its overall crash test scores and crash prevention technology help it stand out. The Crosstrek Hybrid is an IIHS Top Safety Pick+.”

  • Crosstrek Hybrid standard driver-assistance features:
  • Rearview camera
  • Blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert
  • Lane-departure warning with lane-keep assist
  • Front and rear collision warning
  • Forward automatic emergency braking
  • Adaptive cruise control
  • Adaptive pivoting headlights with automatic high beams
  • Rear-seat alert (reminds you to check the back seats for kids or pets before you exit the vehicle)

What’s next for the Crosstrek?

For the 2024 model year, the Crosstrek gets improved safety technology over the 2023 Crosstrek Hybrid.

Subaru redesigned the Crosstrek, and the remodeled subcompact SUV earned higher scores. The IIHS says thanks to improvements in side crash protection and the elimination of subpar headlight options, all 2024 Subaru Crosstrek trims qualify for the new award.

When will Subaru bring back the Crosstrek Hybrid?

Subaru has yet to announce a new next-generation Crosstrek Hybrid, but I expect customers will see one in the next two years. Stay tuned.

For now, the 2024 Subaru Crosstrek is one of the safest small SUVs customers can buy. It’s been improved over the high-scoring 2023 Crosstrek Hybrid trim level.
