CR’s 10 Best Sedans This Year, Subaru Legacy Is Top Of The Class But Not For Long

What are the best midsize sedans you can buy this year? Consumer Reports says the 2024 Subaru Legacy is at the top of its class. But only for a short time.

According to Consumer Reports, Subaru has one of the best midsize sedans you can buy now: the 2024 Subaru Legacy. However, the Legacy sedan has been discontinued after the 2025 model year

Consumer Reports says, "Still, SUVs continue to grow in popularity at the expense of the sedan market."

So, if you want a Subaru Legacy, you have another year. The 2025 Legacy will be the last year it's manufactured. Before I explain why the Legacy is still a top pick for sedan buyers, here are Consumer Reports' best sedan picks.

I've listed the best mainstream 2024 model year midsized sedans from CR's tests in order of their Overall Score.

CR's Best Midsized and Large Sedans You Can Buy Today

  1. Toyota Camry Hybrid
  2. Honda Accord Hybrid
  3. Toyota Camry
  4. Kia K5
  5. Honda Accord
  6. Volkswagen Arteon
  7. Subaru Legacy
  8. Nissan Altima
  9. Hyundai Sonata
  10. Hyundai Sonata Hybrid

What does CR say about the 2024 Legacy?

"The all-wheel-drive Legacy is one of the top midsized sedans. Its super-comfortable ride outshines that of some luxury cars. Handling is responsive but not sporty. Buyers can choose two four-cylinder engines: an 182-hp 2.5-liter or a 260-hp turbo 2.4-liter. The standard engine is adequate but makes an unpleasant roar when pushed. It provides a decent 28 mpg overall. The turbo version delivers strong acceleration and is quieter; it returns 24 mpg overall as the similar Outback SUV. We like that the well-tuned continuously variable transmission prevents the engine from getting too loud. But users must wade into infotainment menus to do some common tasks. BSW and RCTW are optional."

As I said, the Legacy has been dropped from the lineup for various reasons. Number one is its slow sales, and Subaru is making room for more new electric SUVs.

I asked Craig Coven, Subaru of Indiana Communications and External Relations manager, about discontinuing the Legacy sedan. Craig said, "Legacy production coming to an end is certainly bittersweet news. Many models have come and gone at our facility over the past 35 years, but the Legacy was the first to be driven off our line. While some of our long-term associates have begun to retire, we still have many who were here at that time and are understandably sentimental."

I have repeatedly said that Subaru should keep the Legacy and introduce a new Legacy Hybrid. As you can see from the scores above, the top sedans are hybrids. Check out my report here

Subaru Announced Pricing On The 2025 Legacy

The good news is there's little price increase on 2025 models. For the 2025 model year, the Legacy sedan is still available in five trim levels. The base is priced at $26,040 Premium ($28,340), Limited ($35,150), Sport ($35,640), and Touring XT ($39,340).

Destination and delivery fees are included in the price above ($1,145). On all 2025 Legacy trim levels, the dealer fees increased by $55.

How much did the 2025 Legacy price increase?

The Legacy Limited increased by +$2,115. A power moonroof, DriverFocus Distraction Mitigation System, navigation, and a 360-degree heated steering wheel are now standard on Limited trims.

The 2024 Subaru Legacy is at the top of its class, but not for long. Customers have one more year to buy one.
