See how the newest 2021 Tacoma grade is transformed from another popular Tacoma trim.

It seems the most popular midsize truck in the country continues to evolve over time. Toyota Tacoma has added two new trim levels for the 2021 model year.

I have written about the 2021 Tacoma Nightshade Special Edition in a previous story for Torque News. This one will turn some heads.

Now, as the new Trail Special Edition makes its way to dealerships, Tacoma fans will soon see for themselves the added utility and versatility offered here.

2021 Tacoma Trail Edition

Think of Tacoma Trail Edition as an SR5 with plenty of upgrades. Trail is based on an SR5 Double Cab and is available in both two-wheel drive and four-wheel drive powertrains.

It will be available in Super White, Army Green, Cement and Midnight Black color choices.

The cornerstone of the evolution from SR5 to Trail Edition is additional storage in the cargo bed area. Both driver and passenger sides feature lockable storage bins. Driver side storage is insulated and includes a drain plug so you can use it as a cooler. Store a cold one or two, maybe?

2021 Tacoma Trail Edition hits the trails with 16-inch dark gray TRD Off-Road wheels and Kevlar All-Terrain tires.
Sounds like it might be time to think about your next weekend trip to the mountains, the beach or your favorite camping spot.

Other Toyota Tacoma Trail Highlights

In an interesting twist, Trail Edition features the front grille from Tacoma Limited to add a classy look. Does this make it a “hybrid” now?

Another 2021 Toyota Tacoma Trail Edition highlight includes black fabric seats with tan stitching. A 120-volt cargo bed power outlet allows you to plug in your fridges, blenders, power tools and anything else you will need during your next outdoor adventure.

Tacoma Trail Edition comes standard with an 8-inch multimedia touch screen that is compatible with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and Amazon Alexa.

Finally, look for standard all-weather floor liners instead of carpeted floor mats.

The 2021 Tacoma Trail Edition, like most other Tacoma trims, is powered by a 3.5-liter V6 engine. This produces 278 horsepower and 265 lb.-ft. torque, and it is matched with a 6-speed electronically controlled automatic transmission.

2021 Tacoma Trail Edition Price

There is a trick to finding a Tacoma Trail, as it does not have its own trim level. Ordering one requires you to find an SR5 (in either 2WD or 4WD, depending on your preference) with an optional Trail Edition package.

A 2WD Tacoma SR5 Double Cab has a base price of $32,230 from the factory, with an additional $1,805 charge for Trail Edition package.

4WD Tacoma SR5 Double Cab starts at $35,305 and Trail Edition is $1,775 extra.

I suggest looking for a 2021 Toyota Tacoma Trail Edition sooner than later if you are interested in one. Toyota is only manufacturing 7,000 Trail Tacoma trucks, which is spread across all four colors.

Time for your thoughts on 2021 Tacoma

What do you think of Tacoma Trail? Do you see a benefit of the lockable storage compartments and what would you store there? Would you use the cooler function?
