The 2024 Chevrolet Suburban's Latest Award Shows Why it is One of Chevrolet's Most Important Vehicles

Year after year, the Chevrolet Suburban is always one of Chevrolet's top sellers. A recent award from U.S. News and World Report shows why Chevrolet will continue to build the large SUV for years to come.

Even though GM is moving ahead with its plans to eventually go all electric, the automaker is quick to reassure buyers that the company’s most important vehicles will stay in production for “years to come”. That commitment was solidified during last year’s brutal UAW strike, when GM committed to building large SUVs at its huge plant in Arlington, Texas. The automaker is investing $500 million to upgrade the plant that produces the Chevrolet Suburban, Tahoes and GMC Yukons. U.S News & World Report just named the 2024 Chevrolet Suburban one of its Best Cars for Families. U.S. News named the 2024 Suburban the Best Large SUV for Families.

According to U.S. News,

“The Chevy Suburban is an excellent SUV. It boasts more cargo volume and third-row legroom than any other SUV, and its vast interior can comfortably seat eight people. A nine-seat setup is available, but only in the base model. The Suburban offers two potent but thirsty V8 engines, as well as an optional six-cylinder diesel that boasts best-in-class fuel economy. This Chevy rides and handles very well for its size. Its comfy cabin is plain, but its infotainment and other systems are easy to use. It comes with a good number of driver-assistance features, and GM’s Super Cruise hands-free driving system is available.”

How U.S. News & World Report Chose the 2024 Best Large SUV for Families

“To choose our award winners, we looked at 90 new cars, SUVs and minivans from the 2024 model year. Our award methodology combines professional automotive reviews, safety and reliability ratings, seating and cargo volume and the availability of family-friendly features. Within each of the nine automotive classes covered by our awards, the vehicle with the highest composite score is named the Best Car for Families in that category.”

The Chevrolet Suburban beat out several top contenders like the Ford Expedition and Toyota Grand Highlander.

Chevrolet Revamping the Suburban for 2025

As I have reported previously, Chevrolet has already announced upgrades and improvements that it is making in the Suburban for 2025. The 2025 Chevrolet Suburbans will have the same new face as the new Chevrolet Silverado and will come loaded with new technology.

“The new faces of Tahoe and Suburban are more expressive, borrowing inspiration from the recently refreshed Chevrolet truck lineup,” said Phil Zak, executive design director, Global Chevrolet. “They remain as versatile as ever, but with a greater emphasis on the details that have driven these large SUVs to the top of their segment.”

2025 Chevrolet Suburban

One of the first things that drivers will notice is that the new SUVs will have huge best-in-class 17.7 inch-diagonal infotainment screens. Chevrolet is also offering fascinating new technology that would allow customers to remotely view a network of cameras showing the interior and exterior of their vehicle with select OnStar plans. The cameras could also record events like crash and theft. Those new cameras could revolutionize vehicle security.

New Towing Features in 2025 Chevrolet Suburban

Chevrolet is adding more technology to make towing or trailering easier. The 2025 Suburban will continue to include the trailering technologies customers know and love. A Max Trailering package is available and on select trims includes a high-capacity radiator and cooling fan, an integrated trailer brake controller, Hitch View 5, Hill Decent Control 5, Blind Zone Steering Assist with Trailering 5, and the Chevrolet Trailering App.

The 2025 Chevrolet Suburban will also introduce the following new and enhanced features:

  • Trailer Tire Health, which helps prevent trailer tire blowouts.
  • Forward Path Indication, which helps drivers navigate with their trailer with guidelines on the Surround View to indicate the width of the trailer and the trailer’s path. When the turn signal is activated, guidelines will show the driver the estimated turning path for both the vehicle and trailer.
  • Boat Ramp Assist, which helps customers access a checklist and step-by-step instructions to prepare for towing, launching, and retrieving a boat.
  • Trailer Navigation, which calculates routes based on trailer size using built-in Google Maps.
  • The 2025 Suburban continues to offer max towing of 8,200 lbs.

Chevrolet Offering New Diesel Engine

Also new is the refined, second-generation 3.0L inline-six turbo-diesel Duramax, which offers more power for greater confidence on the road — particularly when trailering. It is paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission and is offered on all retail trims, including Z71 for the first time.

Launched previously on the Silverado 1500, the new diesel engine is rated at 305 horsepower and 495 lb.-ft. of peak torque, increases of 10 percent and 7.6 percent, respectively, over the current diesel engine’s 277 horsepower and 460 lb.-ft. of torque.

“The updates on the 2025 Chevy Suburban make the industry’s best-selling full-size SUVs an ever-stronger option for our customers,” said Scott Bell, vice president, Chevrolet. “Our segment-leading position is the envy of our competitors — no one comes close to Chevrolet.”

Together, the Suburban and Tahoe have led the segment in sales for over 45 years. For more information on the U.S. News & World Report 2024 Best Cars for Families awards, visit Cars.usnews.com/cars-trucks/best-cars-for-families.
