Here’s Why Your 2022 Toyota Tundra Is Showing That You Have Less Fuel Than You Really Do

Is your tank on empty but when you fill up it stops a few gallons under the limit? Don’t worry nothing’s broken.

If you are the type of driver to let your car, go to almost empty and then fill up, this article is for you. Specifically for those types of drivers who drive the all new 2022 Toyota Tundra. Now a lot of big trucks have a backup tank which holds a few gallons to help you get to the nearest gas station. A lot of trucks are different. Some show you the mileage included in the tank, others don’t show you, so you won’t calculate your “this’ll last me until…” equation.

Fortunately, the 2022 Toyota Tundra does not show you your remaining emergency fuel because it is kept in the spare tank. However, coincidentally, if you know how much your tank holds, you may think that it shows the car is empty, but it really isn’t making you believe you are putting in 31 gallons in a 32-gallon tank, when in reality you are putting in something like 27 gallons. Here’s how.

On Fakebook’s 2022+ Toyota Tundra owners’ group, David De La Fuente said, “I have a 32-gallon tank and have brought it down to 10-15 miles to empty before refilling the last two times, but it is filling up with 27 gallons. Has anybody experienced anything like this?” This may seem like a pretty silly thing to not pay attention to but believe it or not, a lot of owners have taken to different groups and forums complaining about this. Let’s take a look and see what some of the owners said it was from.

Steve Inglese said, “That's what everyone says it does on purpose. The reserve is big. I've never filled more than 27 gallons.” So, depending on what tank you have, it’s something like 8-10 gallons of just reserve fuel. This is pretty big considering that you might not even use that fuel.

Now don’t really take this as a bit of a problem, in fact, for drivers like me who let their tank go to almost empty before fueling, this is actually a great feature. Let’s say that I’m on the highway and I get lost and I can’t find a gas station anywhere but because of my driving habits, I am almost out of fuel. If I had a reserve tank which did not show up on my fuel gauge, I would not have to worry because I know I would have a few gallons left in the tank before I reached the nearest gas station.

The only thing I wished Toyota would have done was add some sort of “tank menu” to where you could see your reserve tank’s range and how much was in it.

What do you think? Do you like this feature? Let us know in the comments below.

This is a GLITCH and not a feature. What moron wants to leave 100 miles in the tank every time they fill up? Why not fill up at 7/8th of a tank left? Because a fill up takes very valuable TIME. That's why I bought a truck with 32 gallons capacity. Driving around with a truck screaming its empty for 100 miles is a bit problematic.

I totally agree with you. I just purchased 2023 4x4 Tundra, platinum edition. Yesterday it showed I had 60 miles left in the tank to empty. It only allowed me to fill up 24 gallons. That is a lot of extra gallons not showing on miles left to empty. I can see 20-30 miles but not over 100 miles. For an expensive truck like this, they should have done a better job.

I suddenly started wondering about this topic, i had 10 miles to empty on my 2023 tundra sr5 crewmax, i just added 28 gallons, so , i feel very tempted to dive it until it stops to check how many miles i actually can drive on a full tank. I think is not a bad thing that you don't really know how much is left, as long as you fill up thw tank when almost empty, for sure you are going to keep the fuel pump cool, always under some gas.

my 2022 tundra is doing this exact thing and it is telling me im near empty when i have at least 7 gallons left in the tank. if i ignore it a bit it will suddenly jump up to 1/4 tank but then when it gets back to “e” i don’t risk it again and fill up but have never put more than 27 gallons into a 32 gallon tank. i agree this is not a feature, it is a problem that toyota needs to fix.
