In a recent study, Subaru vehicles equipped with EyeSight were found to reduce accidents significantly. How much difference does EyeSight make?

If you drive a Subaru Forester, Outback, Crosstrek, WRX, Impreza or Legacy equipped with EyeSight, you should feel safer. A recent study in Japan found all Subaru vehicles, when equipped with EyeSight, had fewer accidents than non-equipped vehicles. This investigation was done in Japan by the Institute for Traffic Accident Research and Data Analysis (ITARDA).

Significant reduction in accidents

The ITARDA investigation found Subaru vehicles equipped with the EyeSight safety system, had an 80 percent decrease in rear-end collisions between vehicles and 50 percent fewer pedestrian accidents. There was a 60 percent degrease overall in all driver accidents. This study was conducted with EyeSight-equipped Subaru vehicles from 2010 to 2014 in Japan in over 10,000 surveyed accidents.

How does EyeSight work?

EyeSight uses stereo cameras mounted at the top of the windscreen, capturing “live” images of the road ahead. The car recognizes potentially dangerous situations and can alert the driver if they are distracted and help prevent accidents. This can help prevent collisions and reduce impact damage.

The new generation EyeSight system that is featured in the 2016 Subaru Forester, Outback, Crosstrek, WRX, Impreza or Legacy adds brake light recognition, pre-collision steering assist and approximately 40 percent improvement in obstacle detection distance and camera angle view. It accomplishes this by using features like Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Departure Warning, Lane Sway Warning, Lead Vehicle Start Alert, Pre-Collision Braking System, Pre-Collision Brake Assist and Pre-Collision Throttle Management.

Consumers are looking for safety features

Subaru has said they want to be the overall safety leader and they are achieving it with EyeSight. Their vehicles are rated the highest in the U.S., Australia and European safety tests. Subaru’s new-generation EyeSight safety system is catching on with consumers as they want the safest vehicles they can get.

According to the J.D. Power 2015 U.S. Tech Choice Study released recently, three of the top five technologies consumers most prefer in their next vehicle are related to collision protection. Consumers are becoming aware of these systems and are looking for them in their next vehicle purchase. EyeSight is one of the best systems out there for preventative safety. It’s available on the new 2016 Subaru Forester, Outback, Crosstrek, WRX, Impreza and Legacy.

Decrease, rather than degrease, I assume? Can Eyesight do anything about being rear-ended by a vehicle that doesn't have it, or just rear-ending another vehicle?

There is an optional rear collision avoidance system, but as far as I know it's only meant for when your vehicle is moving in reverse and is about to hit something. Being able to use throttle and steering to move *away* from an obstacle is something I haven't seen yet. It would be an amazing feat, though - having enough situational awareness to move freely in all directions to avoid an accident.
