New Subaru Outback Breaks Cover In Cool Grey Khaki But You Can't Get One

How would you like a Cool Grey Khaki 2020 Subaru Outback? The cool color is available now in Japan but U.S. customers can’t touch.

Subaru just announced a new Cool Grey Khaki Subaru Outback but U.S. customers can only look and not touch. This one is for Japan customers only and will not be making it to U.S. shores. Subaru of America announced the new 2020 Outback and unfortunately, it only comes in conservative colors.

The current model top-selling Outback colors are Crystal White Pearl, Ice Silver Metallic, and Crystal Black Silica. The other colors for the 2020 Outback model change are Autumn Green Metallic, Abyss Blue Pearl, Cinnamon Brown Pearl, and Magnetite Gray Metallic.

Subaru knows who their demographic is for their flagship model and the Japanese automaker doesn’t want to do anything that will mess up its formula for success. But there are some customers who want new colors on that exterior besides Wilderness Green Metallic. So why not any cool colors?

Crosstrek gets "Cool Gray Khaki” and it’s going over big with a younger generation who are the biggest demographic buying the new crossover. Because Crosstrek attacks a younger buyer, older Outback lovers get left out of the fun colors. One of our readers told us, “Outback needs cooler color choices, instead of the boring colors they offer! It needs an orange!”

Japan-spec Subaru Outback

Outback fans would like new fun colors like the new-generation Crosstrek with "Sunshine Orange” and the new "Cool Gray Khaki," a shade that can also look a light shade of blue depending on the light. Subaru knows the Outback SUV/Crossover typically attracts an older demographic so the Japanese automaker must think they won’t buy them here in America.

Maybe Subaru Corporation is testing the more contemporary color on Outback in Japan first to see how it sells before they commit to it in North America. We think U.S. customers would buy more of the Cool Gray Khaki or Sunshine Orange than executives at corporate think. So if you would like to see new colors on the newly-redesigned 2020 Outback, leave us your comment below and tell Subaru what new colors you’d like to see.

The new sixth-generation 2020 Subaru Outback begins arriving in dealer showrooms this month. Subaru of America builds it at their U.S. plant in Lafayette, Indiana for North America customers, but you won’t see the new SUV wrapped in Cool Grey Khaki.

Same here. We have had four Outbacks that were red with the ivory interior. For 2020 it’s black only. The Subaru needs to offer the gray interior with the red as well as other exterior colors. Much more low maintenance. They offer it in the Forester across the board. Why not the Outback? Might be time to look elsewhere. Subaru is good at a lot of things, but listening and being responsive isn’t one of them.

Replace Cinnamon Brown w/ Desert Khaki from the prev. generation Crosstrek. Just because Cool Gray is a thing now does not mean Desert Khaki should have ever gone away to begin with. Attract a younger demographic to Outback and get rid of that brown... please.

I’m considering going from my desert khaki cross trek to a 2020 Outback. However I’m not thrilled about the exterior color choices. Especially not fond of the cinnamon. Trade it out for desert khaki. Give us more hip color choices.

I think that all Subaru models should be available in any of their offered colors at the buyers choice. Will they listen? I have been trying to get Subaru to reestablish a dealership in Stuart, Florida for years now and all I get is crickets. BTW we have a 2016 Outback in Wilderness Green.

We currently have a bright yellow Ford Escape and were hoping for an exciting color (yellow or orange) for the new 2020 Outback we want to buy this fall. Yes we are an older demographic but we still want a cool color!

How about a pearlized cream, cafe au lait, darkened red.
Interior colors I’d love are a true saddle tan, dark brown, midrange gray, taupe with cream accents.
Come on SOA, not everyone buying an Outback is going to dragging mud into it daily.

I would like to see the same coloring offerings as the Crosstrek. I especially like the Cool grey Khaki or sunshine orange. Even us boring older (39) buyers like the fun colors!! I think that the fun colors would sell very well on the Outback!

Tired of the Five Shades of Grey approach to colours. Subaru should hire the Massey-Ferguson (yes, the farm equipment company) designer and get some bright reds, and yellows, as options. My favourite car was my bright yellow VW Dasher (platform shared with Audi Fox) in the mid 70s. I’m over 70 and I’ll wait until an interesting colour comes along before trading in my red Outback.

I'm 54 and own an Inferno Tacoma, and as a matter of fact, most inferno owners I knlw are older. A lot of Americans like fun, different colors. We are eventually going to replace our 5 series BMW with an Outback, and would love to have it in cool Grey Khaki.

How come Subaru only allows most interesting colors on the Crosstrek. I have a Crosstrek in Desert Khaki (now, sadly, discontinued) and if I were to buy a new Crosstrek I'd take the Cool Grey Khaki in a heartbeat. Both of those colors have interesting transitions from sunlight to shade. But it appears, at least for the U.S. market, Subuaru wants to field Outbacks, Legacys, Ascents, and Foresters mostly in old fogy colors. Come on Subaru -- give the people at least one fun color.

I mean, the poop brown color is cool! Who would want hip colors on a cool, functional, perfect for a family with young kids car. Not me!
