The 2020 Subaru Crosstrek is one of the top-10 cars in short supply. See why the subcompact SUV is so hard to get.

The 2020 Subaru Crosstrek is a one of the hottest cars in America and according to a new report from Fox News by way of TrueCar, it’s one of the top-10 hardest to find models. Torque News reached out to a large Subaru retailer near Denver, Colorado and they told us they only have three 2020 Subaru Crosstrek subcompact SUVs on their lot. And getting new inventory is a problem.

The Crosstrek’s short supply is partly due to the Subaru plant in Gunma Japan being shut down for eight weeks due to the COVID-19 global pandemic. Subaru’s car production in Japan where the new Crosstrek is made, dropped 46.3 percent in June from the previous year.

It’s also because Subaru has begun to make the switch on its assembly line from 2020 models to the refreshed 2021 Crosstrek model change. The subcompact has been updated with a new engine, a new Sport trim, minor exterior changes, and new safety technology.

When will I be able to get a new Subaru Crosstrek?

We asked the Subaru retailer when the new 2021 Crosstrek models would begin arriving and they told us mid August. And don’t expect to find a good deal on the new 2021 Crosstrek. The source told us they will be asking full retail (MSRP) and won’t be offering any incentives on new models.

Subaru had one of the lowest inventory levels of any automaker even before the plant shutdowns. They do it to keep resale values on its all-wheel-drive vehicles high. Torque News reported in April, Subaru has five of the top models that spend less time sitting on dealer lots than all SUVs. The Subaru Forester is the number one model followed by the 2020 Subaru Crosstrek.

The Subaru Crosstrek is number 7 on the list with an average of 28.5 days on the lot. Customers looking for a 2020 Subaru Crosstrek may find it’s too late to find the exact trim level and color they want.

The newly-refreshed 2021 Subaru Crosstrek will begin arriving in about two weeks and it will be worth the wait. Just don’t expect to get any discount and be ready to pay full MSRP. Look for Torque News to bring you a first look and test drive of the new 2021 Subaru Crosstrek Sport soon.
