When the world gets crazy, it could be a good time to get away from the madness. See how to turn your Subaru Forester, Outback, or Crosstrek into a rolling campsite.

The Subaru Forester, Outback and Crosstrek are known for their “go-anywhere attitude, and with standard all-wheel-drive, they make the best vehicles to get you away from civilization. With all that’s going on with the Coronavirus, you may want to get away from the city for a while. Subaru vehicles are great for camping and you don’t even need a tent or buy a camping trailer. Here is how to do it easily with the gear you may already own, and a couple of other cool accessories.

If you don’t have the money right now to invest in a tent, newer Subaru Forester, Outback, and Crosstrek vehicles are big enough to throw a sleeping bag down and two people can sleep comfortably in the back. If you get a bike roof rack carrier, you can mount the mountain bikes on top and you are ready for the trail this spring.

You can easily turn your Subaru into a campsite

We found a company that makes cool gear for your Subaru that helps you turn your vehicle into a comfortable and convenient sleeping spot within minutes. The company is Luno Life and their signature product is an air mattress that is made specifically for your Subaru Forester, Outback, or Crosstrek.

The mattress fits perfectly behind the front seats when the back seats folded flat. They are made of durable Oxford Nylon fabric and you can take your furry friends with you on the camping trip as they are pet-friendly for easy cleanup. The mattress costs $224.99.

Get away from the madness

The kit includes a full-sized air mattress, two Base Extenders, a 12V air pump for your vehicle, a repair patch, and a carrying case for the system, Luna Life says the mattress comfortably sleeps two people up to 6’3” tall.

I like the idea a lot .. just be aware that if you have a power liftgate on a newer Subaru, like my 2017 Outback, leaving it open overnight will likely run down the battery as the motor draws current the whole time it's open. We have friends with a 2018 who learned this the hard way after just such a camping trip, and they aren't alone! Luckily the kids with them, with their beaters, were able to give them a jump.

I refer to my 2017 Outback as an electric vehicle, as it's always on the battery charger. This makes it problematic to park for a few days without an AC source. For me, it's not only an open liftgate but any door that is ajar will do. So much for the "Battery drainage prevention function". My wife's 2007 Ford Focus is less sophisticated but more reliable.

All you talked about was an air mattress in your article. What a worthless advertisement.

You can buy an air mattress on Amazon for $20 that fits all subarus.

You obviously are having trouble navigating the article and haven't read everything. Try the simplified page version and read the whole artical before being an asshole with your comments.

Haha!!! What a wonderful retort from Torque :) Thanks for providing a real response to an overly critical trolling douche; they're everywhere. It's great to see someone skirt the obligatory Pollyanna reply!!

of these three, which has more leg room & headroom with an air mattress in there? I am tall and have a big dog. Also, curious if benefit of special air mattress is that it fills in the space between folded down backs of seats, and seat sides...

I just did a 5-day 'test' camping trip in my 2019 crosstrek. I had a custom-made, foldable insert with a 2 inch pad that gives a 6'3" sleeping platform. While it worked, and saved me from a monsoon one night, there are a few things to consider:
- a crosstrek is very tight (I'm talking head room) even for a slim person. I'm pretty flexible but I wished I'd gotten that black belt in yoga.
-it gets very warm and stuffy even with one person in it. I had bought mosquito screens for the windows and they did not let much air through. It might be ok with windows wide open and no screens but bugs prevented me from trying this time around. Maybe a tail gate tent/extension would help. I'll try that next. Any experiences out there with those?

I used my Forester for a 6 week trek across the southwest. I used black flexible fabric window shades for the front two windows and purchased a rechargeable battery fan that clips to my steering wheel. I cracked each window about an inch and ran the fan at night. Gave me great air circulation and I could recharge the fan during the day while I was driving. CAVEAT: Use a towel under the fan clip, as I damaged the steering wheel cover slightly with the clips.
