5 Reasons The New Subaru Legacy Is The Best Choice For You Over An SUV

Subaru brings the 2020 Legacy and it’s a good choice for some buyers. Why would you choose the sedan over an SUV?

Subaru is great at marketing their SUVs to outdoor enthusiasts and to those with active lifestyles, but not everyone goes mountain climbing and hikes a fourteener on the weekends. Maybe you don’t need a vehicle to get you off the beaten path and drive deep into the high country. Then maybe the 2020 Subaru Legacy is the best choice for you.

Subaru has sold 28,847 Legacy sedans through October and they will likely sell more now that the new 2020 model change has arrived. The Legacy is not a volume model and it’s only the sixth-best selling model in the stable, but it does have a place in the automaker’s all-wheel-drive lineup. Does it fit your needs?

2020 Subaru Legacy

AWD is the first reason you would want to choose the Legacy. All trims come standard with Subaru’s Symmetrical all-wheel-drive for all-weather capability. It’s the same system the Japanese automaker uses on the Outback, Forester, and Crosstrek SUVs. You won’t be stranded if you need to get through the snow, mud or icy conditions this winter.

Better fuel economy

It also comes with a new turbocharged 2.4-liter Boxer engine if you need the extra power. If not, it still comes with the naturally aspirated 2.5-liter engine. You will get better fuel mileage than any SUV and save money at the pump. The Legacy XT returns EPA mileage figures estimated at 24/32 mpg city/highway. The standard naturally aspirated 2.5-liter flat-4 engine gets an EPA estimated fuel economy of 27/35 mpg city/highway and 30 combined mpg.

2020 Legacy

Not everyone needs to haul two mountain bikes on the top carrier, but its standard roof brackets are there if you need them. The 2020 Legacy comes with 15.1 cu ft of cargo capacity, 1.4 inches of additional cargo floor length, and the trunk in the new-generation sedan can comfortably hold four full-size luggage bags, giving it the functionality to match that of many small crossovers.

If you don’t need the extra ground clearance, ride quality for four passengers will be better than taller SUVs. The new-generation Legacy gets a floor cross member that is filled with a highly rigid and lightweight two-part foam material, and an all-new suspension that is lighter, stronger and more responsive. When we drove the new Legacy, it felt more responsive with improved handling, and a smoother, quieter ride than the outgoing model.

Lastly, the 2020 Subaru Legacy sedan is a good choice with an attractive price point. A well-equipped Legacy Premium trim ($24,995) is priced nearly $4,000 less than a comparably outfitted Outback SUV ($28,895) and it comes with the same safety and technology features. The Legacy is not for everyone, but it’s a good choice if you don’t need a bigger SUV.

Five reasons I would not consider it are #1- ground clearance as I need more than just AWD, I need the clearance in the snow and the Legacy does not offer that. #2 is that the new Nissan Altima also comes AWD, and in the recent comparo (both base engines), the Nissan was faster with better fuel economy so Subaru engineering can do better. #3- uninspired CVT, #4- boxer engine that will always weigh more, and be more complex with two head gaskets predisposing to more mechanical issues, and #5- first year intro with new design, better to wait and get a track record, and not be the beta tester for the company.

The nissan is not in the same league as subaru
Subaru legacy is way better in all aspects than the altima
Not even close
I would take one for free but pay for one would be a bad move, I don't like fake AWD systems

Also check the recalls. Bolts missing, bad welds, some not good news for the Indiana plant. I was interested until I thought about that. I do think articles on cars should mention this type of thing, if known.
