The new 2019 Subaru Forester, Outback and Crosstrek are ready for adventure right off the showroom floor. Are you ready to take it up a level?

The new Subaru Forester, Outback and Crosstrek are adventure-ready with Symmetrical all-wheel-drive, 8.7-inches of ground clearance and a suspension developed on the rally stages, but there are ways to take your vehicle to the next level. Here are five of the best tips for you to get your Subaru ready for more adventure.

Got tires?

You need to do this one thing if you don’t do anything else. Get a set of the best All-Terrain tires and replace the all-season radials that come stock on your Subaru from the showroom floor. These tires are designed mainly for their fuel-economy and light-duty mountain driving to get to the trailhead. They won’t take you deep into the backcountry if you plan on doing any steep trail climbing or forging a small stream. And for the winter adventure, you need the best traction available.

There’s no point in buying a Subaru Crosstrek or Forester with an excellent all-wheel-drive system unless you run tires capable of providing grip in whatever weather and extreme environment you’re facing, so take off the road tires and save them for city driving. The best advice is to run winter rated tires in the winter months and all-terrain tires for summer off-road adventures. Your local tire shop can help you get the right tires for your situation.

Your tires are the only thing between your AWD vehicle and whatever road surface you are driving on and you want the best traction available. Your Subaru Crosstrek or Forester will only take you as far as your tires will allow you to go. When you run the right tires, it will make all the difference in the world.

Get a full-size spare tire

When you are 50 miles from the nearest paved road, you don’t want to be stuck in the middle of nowhere with a flat tire. Tires are the most frequently and easily damaged component on your vehicle. Your new Crosstrek and Forester (unless you get a Forester Sport trim) do not come with a full-size spare tire. So you need to buy an aftermarket roof rack and get a full-size spare tire to match your new treads. Even if have the right size spare, because of the rough terrain it’s possible to get more than one puncture on the same trip. Carrying a tire-repair kit, an air compressor and two cans of Fix-a-Flat will enable you to quickly and easily repair a flat tire yourself.

Getting unstuck

If you are on slippery surfaces there’s a good chance you will get stuck. Even with Subaru X Mode, you aren’t getting out if you are in slick ice, mud, or sand. If you are prepared, it could save you a very expensive tow bill. There is a convenient piece of hardware called Maxtrax that you will glad you have if you are stuck and there’s no-one to pull you out and it doesn’t take up much cargo room. Just slide it under your tires and drive over it for the traction you need and it can get you out of a sticky situation.

If you want more adventure with your 2019 Subaru Forester, Crosstrek or Outback, buy a good set of All-Terrain tires, get a roof rack, carry a full-size spare, a tire repair kit, and get a device like Maxtrax for vehicle recovery and extraction if you get stuck.

"forging a small stream"? Does your water have so much iron content that you can forge it? I'm sorry, but I couldn't resist.

The blue 2018 is my car headed up the North Fork Road out of North Bend, WA. It has BFG KM2s on it, not just "all terrains".
