Mazda unveiled the new 2016 CX-3 compact crossover in LA and fans of the brand in the US market will be happy to hear about the engine it will get.

Mazda’s new 2016 CX-3 compact crossover gets a 2.0-liter SkyActiv engine for North America. The rest of the world in markets where governments still tax gasoline at a much higher rate than diesel will get a slightly more frugal 1.5-liter engine diesel engine.

Mazda CX-3 AWD Drive and Transmission
The CX-3 will come in both front-wheel drive and also all-wheel drive versions. Those that can power all four wheels will get Mazda’s new generation of AWD. Manual transmission lovers will be disappointed to learn that the new 2016 CX-3 will only be offered with a SkyActiv automatic transmission. We do not know if that will be a CVT or a geared transmission. Mazda fans who put a stick shift high on their priority list should keep in mind that the 2015 Mazda3 is now available with a 6-speed manual. For the first time in its new generation, the more powerful 2.5-liter engine can also be paired with the stick.

2016 Mazda CX-3 and Top Safety Pick+
Mazda also hinted that the 2016 CX-3 could be targeting the IIHS Top Safety Pick+ designation. Mazda’s press announcement said in part, “CX-3 will offer a wide range of Mazda's latest active, passive and in-car-infotainment technologies, including the Mazda Connect infotainment system and i-ACTIVSENSE advanced safety features.” In order to qualify for the top safety rating, a vehicle must have forward collision prevention and also score acceptable or better on the small frontal overlap test.

Small crossovers are all the rage. The new Honda HR-V, Nisan Juke, Buick Encore, and similar cute ‘utes are finding customers across all demographics and for use in all types of driving environments.

"The CX-3 will come in both rear-wheel drive and also all-wheel drive versions."

What?? No way this thing is on a rear-wheel drive platform. That's gotta be a typo, right?

The automatic transmission will not be a CVT. The Skyactiv auto is a 6 speed geared transmission. Mazda seems to understand that people who enjoy driving do not like CVTs, and people who enjoy driving are Mazda's target market.
