Tesla Cybertrucks are Illegally Being Sold on the Secondary Market For as Much as $275,000

In the purchase agreement, Tesla makes all new Cybertruck owners sign, and the EV maker explicitly bans anyone from selling their Cybertruck on the secondary market for a year. However, there are Cybertrucks for sale for as much as $275,000.

Although after four years of waiting, Tesla finally started delivering the Cybertruck this past November, interest in the all-electric truck is as strong as ever.

We’re now entering the third month of Cybertruck deliveries, and once an exceedingly rare vehicle, it has become relatively easier to spot the truck out on the roads.

This is good for anyone interested in the Cybertruck; however, if you plan to buy the truck for yourself, the line to purchase the Cybertruck is still exceedingly long.

Currently, Tesla’s exact Cybertruck production number is unclear; however, educated guesses put overall Cybertruck production at a few thousand units.

This is a far cry from the 2 million reservations Tesla has received so far. Based on people who converted their refundable $100 reservations to a binding order, Tesla has revealed that the truck is sold out for the rest of 2024.

Cybertruck’s high demand is despite Tesla only selling Foundation Series versions of the truck, which add $20,000 to the starting price, and not offering the cheapest version, which starts at $62,000.

This mismatch between demand and production undoubtedly leaves open space for people who work to make an easy profit by flipping their new Cybertrucks on the secondary market.

This is precisely what one such individual who was lucky enough to purchase a Cybertruck is doing.

A Facebook user posted the Cybertruck ad and listed the price for the truck at a whopping $275,000.

The morality of buying a product and flipping it for a profit without adding any value is debatable; however, here, Tesla, in the purchase agreement the company makes all new Cybertruck owners sign, explicitly states that a Cybertruck owner is not able to sell his/her truck until a year passes from the day of purchase.

Tesla allows people to sell their Cybertruck in special circumstances; however, that’s only after getting consent from Tesla.

With this massive markup at $275,000, it doesn’t appear the Cybertruck owner has received a confirmation from Tesla to transfer the vehicle to a new buyer.

Given the highly connected nature of Tesla vehicles, anyone purchasing a Cybertruck in the secondhand market should be careful as there is a high likelihood Tesla could determine the illegal sale and shut down the vehicle remotely.

Unless you are someone who wants to buy a Cybertruck to tear the vehicle down to its components, I would not advise you to buy this truck outside Tesla.

Currently, there isn’t a lot of information regarding what kind of legal charges Tesla will bring on anyone who happens to sell their Cybertruck outside the agreement. However, we’ll be sure to keep you posted once we learn more about the issue.
