How Subaru Will Dominate Electric AWD Off-Road Vehicles

More electric Subaru models are coming next year, but what will it mean for Subaru and their all-wheel-drive lineup? Buckle up; here is what customers can expect.

As I've covered Subaru Corporation and Subaru of America in the last twenty years, there are a few things customers can count on from the Japanese automaker. Subaru's core values will remain unchanged despite moving to an all-electric vehicle lineup.

First, New CEO Atsushi Osaki announced in August that the Japanese automaker wants to get half its global volume – an estimated 600,000 units – from full-electric models by 2030. Osaki envisions worldwide sales of 1.2 million vehicles that year. Subaru is expanding its EV lineup to eight models.

But the question customers have is what those eight new electric models will look like. We can get an idea from the recent Japan Mobility Show. Subaru isn't going to rely on previous design language. They want to take customers sky-high. There are some exciting things on the drawing board.

Subaru's Core Values won't change.

Customers want to know if Subaru will stay with what made them successful. Subaru's core values will remain the same. Their new electric vehicles will be fun to drive; they'll have a lower center of gravity for improved driving dynamics, the latest safety tech, and new battery technology developed with Toyota.

Subaru will offer new electric vehicles for city commuting, family-friendly models, and even new eco-performance sports cars. But what about Subaru's customers with active lifestyles?

How Subaru will dominate the electric vehicle off-road segment.

Subaru will satisfy its active customer base who use their vehicles for more than a grocery hauler and commuter vehicle. Subaru will dominate the electric vehicle off-road segment. Look for Subaru to design and manufacture all-electric, all-wheel-drive vehicles with improved severe-weather and all-terrain performance.

But those things won't change and are the easy part. They are in Subaru's DNA. The automaker has new challenges.

Subaru is testing new Symmetrical all-wheel-drive systems that will sync with more powerful electric motors. The Japanese automaker's most significant challenge will be figuring out how to get extended range so customers can use the electric vehicles to get further away from the city and off the grid.

As I have written previously, Subaru Corporation is moving forward fast toward its electric model goals. Subaru puts its money on new EV development.

Subaru spent about $206.6 million on an Innovation Hub where design teams can simultaneously work on 13 new electric vehicles. Subaru plans to put $10.3 billion into electrification through 2030. That sum does not include the Innovation Hub but covers $1.7 billion already announced for retooling domestic production.

Global design boss Tatsuhito Itano, who oversees Subaru's new elaborate design center, says Subaru is in the global electric vehicle race to win. Once the furthest behind, Subaru is taking significant steps to lead electric vehicle technology.

Subaru is coming with new rugged outdoor-themed models that will be eco-friendly. It's how Subaru will dominate the electric vehicle off-road segment. It will be an exciting ride. Stay tuned.
