Ram is voluntarily recalling previous generation diesel trucks. See why your truck may be affected.

Ram is incredibly successful with its EcoDiesel program and that is what makes the new recall so unfortunate. Ram is recalling nearly 160,000 2015-2019 Ram 1500 EcoDiesels because of a coolant leak that could lead to engine fires. The recall affects the second-generation EcoDiesels not the all-new third-generation diesel engine.

How Ram Discovered to Fire Risk

The company tracked the problem through dealer-service reports and other information that lead to an internal investigation. Ram discovered tiny, microscopic cracks in some of the Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) coolers.

According to Ram, “If these microscopic cracks are present, coolant may escape and – in rare circumstances – pose an engine fire risk. FCA US is aware of a small number of fires and four minor injuries that occurred when customers attempted to manually extinguish engine compartment fires; the Company is unaware of any related accidents.”

Who is Affected by the Ram Recall

It is important to note that this recall does not affect any of Ram’s hot-selling gasoline-powered pickups. It also does not affect the all-new 2020 Ram 1500 EcoDiesel. The recall only affects 2014-2019 Ram 1500s with the previous generation EcoDiesels.

Ram will notify customers who are affected about when they can schedule service. Until then, owners are being advised to monitor their coolant levels and if they are consistently low, contact their dealers immediately.

The recall affects 107,898 vehicles in the United States. It also affects another 50,159 Ram trucks in Canada and another 1,730 trucks sold outside North America.

The recall is so new that it doesn’t even have a recall number from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, yet.
