A Future Tesla Destroyer

Its not too far a leap to expect an electric performance car out of Nissan Motors using the Nissan GT-R platform. Besides why couldn’t they? The company has suggested that they are seriously considering producing the Nissan GT-R as a fully electric version soon.

Could they do it? Sure. They changed the world with the introduction of the fully Electric Nissan Leaf in 2011 and became the #1 all-time electric car seller in terms of volume of any car manufacturer in the world. In 2014 the company raced a zero emissions Leaf RC Concept at Le Mans and have been pioneering self-driving technology.

Are they committed to it? Nissan’s European EV Director stated to Top Gear “We can’t build an electric GT-R today. But do I want to? I’d Love to. Will we be able to do that in the future? I can’t see a technical reason why we wouldn’t be able to implement electric vehicle technology in something like a performance vehicle.”

So do the mainstream auto makers want to go after Tesla’s market? So far, in my estimation, none has even made a serious attempt. There isn’t one 250 mile all electric car that even competes with Tesla.

Could Nissan become a Tesla competitor? Oh yes, I fully believe they can. Take the Nissan GT-R and make it fully electric, with its own version of Tesla’s performance buttons like the “Insane button” and “Ludicrous button”, and you will have a strong competitor. Just don’t make it a hybrid, give it at least 250 miles of EV range.

The SE-R weighs 3900 pounds even before adding a 1200-pound battery pack (albeit, while subtracting some gas-related components), and thus won't hold a candle to, for instance, the i8.

However, there a number of 250-mile cars that will be competing directly with Tesla within the next 24-36 months-- specifically, the Audi Q6 e-tron, VW Phaeton EV, Porsche Mission E and the as yet unnamed car from Mercedes, as well as a Volvo and Aston Martin by 2019. And of course there will be a 200-mile Bolt and Leaf out 18 months before Tesla MIGHT have a Model 3 in production, and a 170-mile 2nd generation i3. Additionally, BMW will have an i5 plug-in hybrid around then that might offer as much as 100 miles of plug-in range plus essentially unlimited gas-powered range (with quick fill-ups, of course). And then one could argue that the new Volt (out now) makes more sense anyway than the Model 3 (or any other mass-market pure EV).

I don't see much weight added by the battery, considering high performance car engines tend to be pretty heavy 500-600lb. Less than the battery but overall it won't be by much. They can also shave weight by going carbon fiber since it will most likely be limited production car.

Also, neither the Bolt nor the Leaf is indicated to hit over 250 miles. So far GM is saying max of 200 miles. Leaf based on their tests is estimated about 180 miles. There is also no indicator that they will put out those cars 18 month in advanced because so far latest indicators point to Bolt might even be pushed back to 2018. Now of course it is not impossible for them to push out the car earlier than Tesla just for the sake of publicity. But even then I don't see much prospects, specifically because based on LG ramp up times and how many different companies they are supplying, I can see nothing more than a few limited production model of each.

Your "latest indicators" re the Bolt production date are amusing, considering that just a few weeks ago GM confirmed production for the fall of 2016. There's also a Bolt-related press conference scheduled for tomorrow.

Thanks for your comment Mark. Yes, the EV market is going to be a competitive place in the next few years. It will be interesting to see who takes the bait, jumps in a makes a go of it! It truly will be a fun ride for sure. Add into it the self-driving aspect of the innovation and the disruption is ready to happen. Great time to be writing about cars!

I'm no expert - just a very interested enthusiast. What Honda is doing, as a hybrid, with the new NSX seems astounding to me. This should at least get people a bit more frothy about electric, even though it is only a hybrid. What think ye?

Without a Supercharger network equivalent, why would anyone even consider any other EV ?

There has been no shortage of car manufacturers CAPABLE of producing a phenomenal electric vehicle, maybe even good enough to compete with Tesla. The only shortage has been in morivation. Now it seems like they found incentive to build more than compliance vehicles.
Nissan was the first manufacturer to see beyond compliance eeking techniques. CUDOS. Tesla brought it to a whole new level, and did it without the resources , experience or knowhow of existing manufacturers. CUDOS.
Still not enough to move others into action.
Enter THE VOLKSWAGON SHAMING
Happy to see everyone finally entering the market
