Once again the very ugly Takata Airbag fiasco has raised its head in the hallowed halls of Honda

According to the Wall Street Journal and others in Thursday morning news, Honda Motor Company will once again expand what has shaped up to be the biggest automotive recall in history.

This time, 668,168 Japan specific cars manufactured between 2009 and 2011, encompassing 16 models, including Honda Accord, Clarity FCEV, Fit and Insight Hybrid, will be recalled for potentially dangerous, faulty airbag propellants that can possibly lead to explosive deployment, fragmented plastic canisters, and grievous personal injury or death.

To date 100 million cars and light truck owners impacted by the Takata airbag recall

The short story: I don’t have the “world-wide” numbers at my disposal. But it’s been reported in North America, that no fewer than 100 million cars and light trucks covering several makes and models, are now included in what has shaped up to be the largest automotive component recall in U.S., if not world history. Torque News associate Marc Stern talks about Takata here.

Honda’s initial recall was limited to hot and humid tropical zones in the U.S. and its territories, and has been expanded several times as reports of faulty Takata Airbags filter into Honda through accident and dealership service records.

As reported earlier by Torque News, despite several recall notification campaigns presented by Honda, and NHTSA’s safecar.gov, due to the logistics of contacting the present owner of an older car that may have been bought and sold several times, an unfortunately high percentage of recalled Takata specific vehicles remain on the road today.
