The Kia Niro EV had two consecutive sales records in Europe, with 3,386 units delivered in August 2020. The demand for EVs is growing, and Hyundai-Kia is ready to step up to the plate.

Kia Niro EV Sales

Hyundai-Kia is ready to be a global EV sales leader by 2025. The future of motoring will be EVs, whether you like it or not. Jose Pontes at Clean Technica just posted an article about Europe Plug-In Sales, and the Kia Niro EV is now number 6 on the list for August 2020 with 3,386 sales.

That figure is impressive because this is the second month where the Niro EV set a sales record in Europe, so demand is growing. On the Hyundai side, the Kona EV is sitting at number 4 for August 2020 EV sales in Europe with 4,054 sales. Of course, the number one vehicle on the list is the Tesla Model 3, with 7,020 sales for August 2020.

The Niro mentioned is the full electric version, the plug-in Kia Niro (PHEV) sold 1,641 units in August 2020. But, demand in Europe is clearly for the full electric variants, and it is clear the Koreans are quickly moving up the ladder due to an excellent price point and quality. The latest member of the top 5 list for August 2020 EV sales is the Mercedes A250e PHEV, selling 3,505 units sitting between the Kona and Niro at number 5.

Carmakers & EVs

So it’s not just Hyundai-Kia that are serious about EVs, but all manufacturers like Mercedes and Audi are out to get a piece of that Tesla pie, but that’s short term. With stringent regulations, companies are forced to produce these EVs, but when Hyundai-Kia makes EVs, it matters far more because regular people can afford them.

Luxury EVs with exorbitant price tags don’t make sense as they will only serve as a status symbol for the wealthy, and the numbers outlined in the article prove this. The Audi e-Tron and VW e-Golf rank seven and eight on the August 2020 sales list for EVs, below the Kia Niro EV. For Hyundai-Kia to outsell, some of these European brands shows that it has the right approach to EVs.

Kia Niro EV Sales Conclusions

I’ve written multiple articles in the past talking about Hyundai-Kia’s plan to be a top 3 global manufacturer of EVs by 2025. These sales figures are showing us that the Korean automaker is slowly getting there. With Hyundai coming out with the “IONIQ” electric car range soon, there is a lot to look forward to with Korea’s upcoming EVs.

Nice article but the headline seems misleading. Kia didn't break any records, it just had its two best months of sales. I think that would be a more accurate headline "Kia had its best two months of sales".

As you note in the article, Kia is still down the list with the Tesla Model 3 at the top. No records broken by Kia there.
