The new 2014 Subaru WRX STI Rally Car is back in Atlanta, Michigan for the start of the 2014 Rally America Championship at Snow* Drift Rally.

You don’t want to try this with your daily commuter unless you own a Subaru. The 2014 Subaru WRX STI Rally car and team will take on ice and lots of snow at the upcoming Sno*Drift Rally event in Atlanta, Michigan January 24-25, 2014. At the time of this writing, the temperature is 1 degree with light snow falling on the course. It will be extremely challenging for the new WRX STI Rally Car.

This event is aptly named “ Sno*Drift” for a very good reason. Over 120" of the white stuff has already fallen in the local area this winter. The new 2014 Subaru WRX STI will be ready for the snow and ice and has been completely redone and given new updates over last years championship winning model.

The new 2014 WRX STI will feature next-generation lightweight cockpit controls. The new controls will reduce weight and be easier for the driver to use. The rear suspension will feature a new wheel scraper under the brake rotor to keep dirt, mud and snow from building up on the rear wheels. It will also come with backlit control panels for easy operation during night stages. The 2014 Subaru rally car will feature LED lighting integrated into the rollcage padding for the first time.

The 2014 WRX STI Rally Car uses the same Subaru Symmetrical all-wheel-drive that comes on production models that people commute to work with every day. Subaru has always been committed to building cars that have the Symmetrical AWD system for one main reason. It’s about supreme stability under all driving conditions. This system has been rally-bred and tested.

The competitor's AWD systems need additional drivetrain components to route the same power to the wheels, often using complex designs. More components tend to reduce vehicle efficiency and often add to higher maintenance costs. Subaru’s balanced design helps add control through uniform stability. With power being distributed to the wheels with the best traction, it helps the driver hold true to the intended path.

David Higgins and Craig Drew will be using a new 2014 WRX STI Rally Car equipped with this same Symmetrical AWD system. They’ve been in Michigan for the past two days testing and tuning their new machine and seeing how it will handle the snow and ice. And there is lots and lots of snow, and the road bases are reported to be extremely icy and slick. A thin layer of snow covers a dense glare ice base which will quickly be exposed making the roads even more challenging when the race starts tomorrow.

Today, rally teams will complete their recce of the course, followed by the official shakedown Friday morning and event start at 2:30 pm in Lewiston, Michigan. Stay tuned as we see how the new rally-bred 2014 Subaru WRX STI handles all this snow at the Sno* Drift Rally 2014. Unless you own a Subaru, don’t try this at home with your daily commuter.
