A new Subaru plug-in hybrid for North America

We do know a new plug-in hybrid is coming to North America. Fuji Heavy Industry (FHI) CEO Yasuyuki Yoshinaga said at the Tokyo Motor Show, “The next-generation platform will also be compatible with design elements that will be required for a new era of Subaru models, including electric-technology-based vehicles and cars equipped with automated driving technology.”

Subaru is working on a new plug-in hybrid for North America to meet California's zero-emission vehicle standards taking effect in 2018. Subaru plans to introduce the new plug-in hybrid in an existing model, not a new vehicle. FHI President Yasuyuki Yoshinaga said recently, “Fuji Heavy is working to comply with California's zero-emission vehicle standards taking effect in 2018.” While the first new Subaru plug-in hybrid likely won’t be a WRX STI, FHI could be working on the technology for the performance sedan in the future.

A hybrid WRX STI?

Subaru has already developed a new powertrain that incorporates a revised version of the Subaru 2.0-liter turbocharged boxer engine and combine it with an electric motor in the Japan-only Impreza Sport Hybrid. Sources have told motoring.au, Subaru is also testing a plug-in hybrid version of a new WRX STI hybrid model which should be revealed at the Tokyo Motor Show in 2018. They also said it will come with a new AWD system with an electric motor driving the rear axle. All this is rumor at this point.

Look for Subaru to introduce the new plug-in hybrid technology for the U.S. market in 2018. The new Subaru PHEV will be based on Toyota’s hybrid technology and it’s very likely it will first come packaged in the new 2017 Impreza sedan and 5-Door hatchbacks that will be built here in the U.S. Is a new Subaru WRX STI hybrid in the works? Stay tuned.
