Consumer Reports says there are eleven sedans you should have on your shopping list now. Check out the list and why the Subaru Legacy makes the cut.

Even though many buyers want an SUV for its room, cargo carry ability, and utility, sedans are still a smart choice for many buyers. Consumer Report (by subscription) updated its best midsize and large sedan list. I'll tell you four reasons why the 2024 Subaru Legacy is a top pick.

First, the best mainstream midsized and large sedans from CR's tests comprise the models that scored high in road tests, reliability, and owner satisfaction and come with standard safety technology.

What does CR say about the 2024 Subaru Legacy?

  • Price Range:  $24,895 - $38,195
  • CR MPG:  Overall 28 / City 19 / Hwy 39 mpg
  • #6 of 12  Midsized cars

"The all-wheel-drive Legacy is one of the top midsized sedans. Its super-comfortable ride outshines that of some luxury cars. Handling is responsive but not sporty. Buyers can choose two four-cylinder engines: an 182-hp 2.5-liter or a 260-hp turbo 2.4-liter. The standard engine is adequate but makes an unpleasant roar when pushed. It provides a decent 28 mpg overall. The turbo version delivers strong acceleration and is quieter; it returns 24 mpg overall in the similar Outback SUV. We like that the well-tuned continuously variable transmission prevents the engine from getting too loud. But users must wade into infotainment menus to do some common tasks. BSW and RCTW are optional.”

I've driven the Legacy, so here's why I think it's the best choice.

1. The Subaru Legacy comes standard with Subaru's proven Symmetric all-wheel-drive system. It offers better all-weather performance than the other sedans.

2. The Subaru Legacy has excellent safety scores. All Legacy trims come standard with Subaru's EyeSight driver assist safety technology.

3. You won't find a better road car. The Legacy gets 89/100 for its road test score and has superior driving dynamics.

4. The Legacy's Boxer engine sits low in the chassis and has a lower center of gravity than any of the other sedans, which is why it performs so well on the road.

I have a 2022 Legacy XT Touring that is such a pleasure to drive. Comfort, quiet, power, luxury, and I won’t get carjacked. Valets comment: this is a Subaru?!? Friends say: this is nicer than my Mercedes!
