Certain BMW M2 Coupes, M3 Sedans, M4 Coupes and M4 Convertibles are being recalled for not replacing the rear sub-frame bolts.

BMW is recalling certain model year 2016 BMW M2 Coupe vehicles, 2015-2017 M3 Sedan vehicles and 2015-2016 M4 Coupe and M4 Convertible vehicles. The NHTSA says that during servicing of the rear differential for a prior service action, the rear sub-frame bolts may have been reused instead of being replaced.

This is the due to the earlier stop-delivery that BMW issued back in July that called for the rear differential to be replaced in certain M2s, M3s, M4 Coupe and Convertible, M5 and regular 5 Series, M6 and 6 Series models. Some of those models were recalled, fixed, and the rear sub-frame bolts may have been reused instead of being replaced.

What’s the issue?

Because techs reused the existing bolts, this may cause the bolts to loosen. Loose rear sub-frame bolts may adversely affect vehicle handling and control, increasing the risk of a crash. According to NHTSA, only 72 vehicles were affected by the prior service action.

What should owners do?

BMW will notify owners, and dealers will replace the rear sub-frame bolts with new bolts, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin October 24, 2016. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.
