How much cargo space does the 2021 Subaru Outback have? See why it's rated one of the seven best midsize SUVs. There is another area where it is best in class.

Are you looking for a roomy midsize SUV, has excellent cargo space and fuel-efficient? With gas prices rising, fuel economy is now more of a factor in which SUV is best. Consumer Reports (by subscription) found seven midsize SUVs that get good fuel economy and can carry your family along with all your belongings.

The 2021 Subaru Outback is technically a wagon. Still, its cargo-carrying ability and utility put it number six on the CR's best midsize SUVs list, where the Outback beats the competition in fuel efficiency.

The 2021 Outback XT turbocharged model gets an EPA estimated 23/30 city/highway mpg and 26 combined mpg. If you choose the 2.5-liter engine, it gets 26/33 mpg city/highway and 29 combined mpg.

The seven best midsize SUVs for roominess and comfort

Consumer Reports says the 2021 Toyota Highlander is number one in roominess and comfort inside, followed by the Lexus RX, Kia Sorento, Kia Telluride, Hyundai Palisade, Subaru Outback, and Mazda CX-9.

The 2021 Subaru Outback does not have the largest cargo room in the category with its 37 cubic ft. of cargo room with the second-row seat folded flat. But the wagon/crossover gets the best fuel efficiency in its class.

The Outback's overall 29 mpg/city 26 / highway 33 mpg beats the Highlander overall 22 mpg/city 14 / highway 32 mpg, Lexus RX overall 22 mpg/city 14 / highway 31 mpg, Kia Sorento overall 25 mpg/city 17 / highway 34 mpg, Kia Telluride overall 21 mpg/city 14 / highway 30 mpg, Hyundai Palisade overall 21 mpg/city 15 / highway 29 mpg, and Mazda CX-9 overall 22 mpg/city 15 / highway 32 mpg.

Is there a downside to the Subaru Outback?

Consumer Reports says, "The standard four-cylinder engine gets good fuel economy but becomes loud when pushed; the uplevel 260-hp, turbo engine in the XT trim gives the Outback effortless punch and a quieter demeanor."

What is the price of the 2021 Subaru Outback?

The 2021 Outback comes in seven trim levels, base $27,845, Premium ($30,095), Limited ($34,645), Onyx Edition XT ($36,195), Limited XT ($38,545), Touring ($39,045), and Touring XT ($40,995). Pricing includes $1,050 destination.

The 2021 Subaru Outback does not have the most cargo carrying space, but it offers the best fuel mileage of the seven best midsize SUVs. The Outback was just awarded the lowest cost to own in the Midsize SUV/Crossover category. Check out the full Torque News report below.

You have a typo. The outback has ~ 75 cubic feet of cargo space with the 2nd row lying flat - not 37. It's smaller than the others, but not THAT small.

The listed cargo dimensions here are incorrect. The cargo dimensions are around 37 cubic feet behind the 2nd row of seats, 75 if the seats are folded down.
