Your 2016 Mazda MX-5 Miata is here – hope you like red

Good news for those who have been waiting for a new (red) Miata.

Mazda has been posting up images of the new Miatas arriving at ports for a few days now. The cars look great and from the images of many rows of cars, it would seem that those waiting to buy will be able to get one of the first cars in about a month or less. Our scrutiny of the images revealed on interesting thing though. They are almost all red.

Red is a wonderful color for a Miata. The outgoing Gen-3, called NC by Miata fans, looked dynamite in red and black in the 2015 Club edition. Without bothering our Mazda contact, we can pretty much guess that red is by far the most popular color if only one could be chosen. So red makes sense.

The Miata is a car that looks fantastic in a number of colors though, and it would be nice to see it live in black at least as a comparison. Triple black (black paint, black leather, and black soft-top) is a very popular choice for many specialty cars.

We’d like to enlist our readers help. If you spot a 2016 Mazda Miata in the wild, please let us know what color you see. If you can grab a photo, post it at our Facebook page.

The first of the 2016 Miatas to hit the US are ALL red. This is the "Launch" edition, which is limited to about 1200 units. Most of these cars are already spoken for. Subsequent shipments will feature additional colors.

There are some non-red ones off to the right in that picture. The 'Soul Red' combo with Tan leather interior is the special 1000 car 'Launch Edition'. The only way to get that red with tan combo was with the launch edition for 2016. I have one on order :) It was a crazy day ordering them as they had their website to do so, but it was crashing. When I got my order confirmed, there were only a few left. So, hopefully, mine is in the picture!!

The numbers per area of the country were strictly allocated to spread out the distribution evenly around the population centers of the country. Pretty smart marketing. So at about the same time, everyone will start seeing glimpses of these little red and tan beauties all around the country. No one will be able to order them though as these special launch edition ones sold out quickly the 1st day. Red and Black will be available though.

John M, thank you pointing out that not all the cars in the image are red. I didn't want to bicker with other comments. I should have mentioned the Launch. The shipment shown must include dealer inventory beyond the Launch Edition. Still, they are mostly red.
