Hybrids and plug-in hybrids are hot right now. In 2023, Toyota saw an increase greater than 30% in its hybrid, plug-in hybrid, battery-electric, and fuel-cell electric vehicles.

Toyota, the clear leader in electrified vehicles in North America, released its year-end delivery data today. The facts show that Toyota is not only the industry leader in terms of the depth of products offered, but also a delivery volume leader of electrified vehicles.

Toyota Year Over Year Electrified Vehicle Deliveries Rise by 31%
Toyota’s combined deliveries from both its Toyota-branded and also its Lexus-branded electrified vehicles rose by 30.8% in 2023 compared to 2022. Toyota-branded vehicle deliveries were up by 26.5%, and the Lexus-branded electrified vehicles were up a whopping 66.5%. In total, Toyota North America delivered 657,327 electrified vehicles.

Prius, Mirai, bZ4X, and RAV4 Prime All See Strong Growth
Toyota is unique in North America. No other brand offers the variety of green electrified vehicles Toyota does. With its offering of fuel cell electric vehicles, battery-electric vehicle vehicles, plug-in hybrid-electric vehicles, and hybrid-electric vehicles spanning every product category, Toyota serves the widest group of green vehicle consumers in the world.

Each of Toyota’s flagship products in each type of electrified vehicle saw substantial growth in 2023. The bZ4X is a battery-electric crossover vehicle from Toyota. It grew by 667% in 2023. The Mirai is Toyota’s fuel-cell electric vehicle. It grew by 31% in 2023. The RAV4 Prime is one of Toyota’s many plug-in hybrid-electric vehicles, and the company's volume leader in this segment. Its deliveries were up 41% in 2023. The Prius is the world’s best-selling hybrid car and Toyota’s new for 2023 Prius had a delivery increase of 22%.

Green Minivans and Trucks Continue To Expand
Toyota’s electrified vehicles continue to expand throughout the company’s lineup. The Tundra pickup, Sequoia large SUV, Sienna minivan, and the new Grand Highlander are all available as hybrids or are exclusively hybrid. Making its largest and most capable vehicles more energy efficient has long been at the core of Toyota’s philosophy.

Toyota’s Sales Growth Continues
Toyota’s global leadership in sales volume continues today in part because Toyota has offered more of what buyers want. With its green vehicles now approaching 30% of total sales, and a global annual sales rate of nearly 10 million automobiles, no other company rivals Toyota’s green vehicle delivery rate. BYD (China) and Tesla remain a distant second and third place in the electrified green vehicle market.

The chart below lists Toyota’s electrified vehicle deliveries. In total, Toyota delivered 2,248,477 vehicles in 2023 in the United States, a growth of seven percent compared to 2023.
