Ford Motor Company and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration have announced a recall of a variety of Ford brand trucks and sport utility vehicles over the possibility of the rear lights failing to work over time.

This new Ford recall relates specifically to F Series Super Duty pickups including F-250, F-350, F-450 and F-550 trucks from the 2002 to 2007 model years, Ford Excursion SUVs from the 2002 to 2005 model years and 2011 Ford Rangers that were built between January 25th 2011 and April 25th, 2011. While there have been no specifics as to exactly what types of vehicles are being recalled, with this recall affecting only 26,715 vehicles over the 9 years the recall covers – it must be a fairly specific group of vehicles to receive the problematic components.

In these Ford trucks and SUVs being recalled, the multifunction switch which controls the various taillight functions may a sliding internal component that “may experience deformation”. Should this internal component of the multifunction switch deform and fail, it could prevent the turn signals, brake lights and hazard signal lights from working. In short, if the multifunction switch in your F Series, Ranger or Excursion fails, so do your taillights. Should the taillights fail, this increases the likelihood of an accident so Ford is pulling these vehicles back into dealerships to address the issue.

Owners will be notified as to this new Ford truck and SUV recall on or around August 15th, at which point the owners of these 26,715 vehicles will be asked to stop by their local Ford dealership where the multifunction switch will be replaced with one not expected to fail. These repairs will, of course, be done free of charge to the owner. Luckily, if you own one of these vehicles and are worried about the issue before being notified in mid-August, it isn’t that hard to check that your lights are working before using the truck each time.

That's a lot lot of vehicle lines to be recalled. Hopefully this is just a minor setback from Ford and not as sever as the ones that happened to Toyota. What I like about Ford trucks is its durability from its custom truck bumpers. They look really tough and bulletproof to any collision.
