The 2011 Chevrolet Volt was initially offered in a few markets around the US including California, Washington, D.C., Texas, New York Michigan, New Jersey, and Connecticut but as the innovative electric vehicle looks to build sales as the end of the year nears – the Chevy Volt is beginning to arrive in new markets including North and South Carolina.

The first 27 examples of the 2011 Chevrolet Volt to hit the Carolinas will go to a variety of utility companies in the area as part of the partnership between the Electric Power Research Institute and General Motors. These vehicles will be used by the utility companies to study their usage and effects on the power grid, with the vehicles being delivered to those commercial customers starting this week. The delivery of the innovative electric vehicles with range extending capacities coincides with the beginning of the 2011 Plug-In Conference in Raleigh, North Carolina. Moving forward, 2011 Chevy Volt models will begin reaching the 128 applicable Chevrolet dealerships in North and South Carolina sometime in August.

The key issue with the early sales of the 2011 Chevrolet Volt has been the lack of markets in which the electric vehicle is sold. Chevrolet chose a small group of markets for the initial launch with these selected areas being the most likely to show strong electric vehicle sales but as the company moves forward, sales growth will rely on the company’s abilities to provide vehicles to new areas. The Volts introduction to the Carolinas is the first step in the latest phase of new areas that are set to receive the Chevy Volt by the end of this year, including Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Oregon, and Pennsylvania.

General Motors could really use increased sales numbers from the Chevy Volt as the biggest competition – the Nissan Leaf – has lead the electric vehicle segment in sales over the past few months after GM lead through the first few months of the year.
