Three Reasons Why Ram Expects to Lead the Diesel Segment

Ram is outfitting its Ram trucks with a third generation EcoDiesel and is confident it will lead the pack. We have three reasons why they predict it will lead the segment.

Ram says it will have a third generation EcoDiesel ready for all of its 2020 Ram 1500 buyers that want one. Ram says it will even have a 2020 Ram Rebel EcoDiesel available for the very first time. As of right now, Ram believes it will lead the segment because of its astonishing torque numbers. The new 2020 Ram 1500 EcoDiesel will have 480 lb.-ft. of torque.

Ram’s Leading Torque Numbers

As of right now, the 3.0-liter V-6 with its 480 lb.-ft. of torque puts the 2020 Ram EcoDiesel at the head of the half-ton diesel class. That is a 14 percent improvement in torque compared to the previous EcoDiesel V-6 engine. For example, General Motors recently confirmed that its 2020 Chevrolet Silverado and 2020 GMC Sierra with the new in-line six diesel will produce 277 horsepower and 460 lb.-ft. of torque. However, GM will still best the Ram EcoDiesel in horsepower. The Ram will have 260 horsepower at 3,600 rpm. GM’s numbers haven’t been certified by the government yet and final numbers could change.

Ram is also claiming that it will have the highest half-ton diesel towing capacity at 12,560 pounds.

Ram Predicting Great Fuel Economy Numbers

One of the biggest questions for any truck buyer is fuel economy. Ram is expecting to have segment-leading fuel economy. Ram says that its class-exclusive air suspension will help enhance its diesel fuel economy because it improves ride control. The air suspension will also help with the diesels’ off-road capability.

“The new Ram 1500 EcoDiesel is America’s most powerful half-ton diesel pickup, following up on Ram’s Heavy Duty torque leadership and achieving what no other manufacturer has, with up to 480 lb.-ft. of torque in a 3.0-liter engine,” said Reid Bigland, Head of Ram Brand. “The all-new EcoDiesel engine and our eTorque mild-hybrid powertrain technologies deliver the highest available fuel efficiency for our Ram 1500 customers.”

Diesel Available for All Trim Levels

It is interesting that the EcoDiesel will be offered on all the available 2020 Ram trim levels including the popular Ram Rebel off-road editions. Typically, diesels are reserved for the work-horse models.

The 2020 Ram 1500 EcoDiesel will go on-sale in the fourth quarter of 2019. Pricing for the 2020 trucks and fuel economy ratings will be announced closer to the truck’s sale date.

I think I’m gonna love a Ram Diesel truck in 2020 - Rebel or Big Horn. The final stumbling block for me switching from Ford to Ram could still be the Ram’s lack of Advance Safety features availability in all but their high end trucks. I’m hoping in 2020 that Ram will offer it across the 1500 line, like they do for 2500/3500’s. Do you know anything about Ram’s 2020 feature upgrades, beyond the 3.0 diesel? - Gary
