How long did it take Tesla to get to 6 million vehicles made?

Tesla just announced it has produced 6 million vehicles. This is a milestone achievement for the company, and it's important to understand the timeline of how fast Tesla has ramped its EVs in production.

Here is a timeline of how long it took Tesla to get to its 6 millionth vehicle produced, which Tesla just announced via its X account.

  • 1 millionth car : 144 months
  • 2 millionth car : 18 months
  • 3 millionth car : 11 months
  • 4 millionth car : 7 months
  • 5 millionth car : 6.5 months
  • 6 millionth car : 6.25 months

There has been a decline in time for each million that is made, starting with Tesla's initial ramp of its original Tesla Roadster and the Model S, Model X, and beginning the Model 3 and now the Model Y and Cybertruck.

The first million vehicles was very difficult and time-consuming for Tesla. It took 144 months or 12 years!

This goes to show how hard it is to reach volume production and why Lucid, Rivian, and any other company trying to make EVs is going to have a difficult time getting started.

The next million took a year and a half and was a much faster ramp. This was largely due to the Model 3 ramping.

Future millions came down in production time to the point it's about half a year to make a million vehicles.

How long will it take Tesla to get to 7 million vehicles made?

Tesla will likely get to 7 million vehicles in under 6 months. I'm predicting about 5.75 months.

This is due to the Cybertruck ramping, as well as continued ramping of the Model 3 Highland and the Model Y throughout China, Europe, and the U.S.

These times are going to seem like rounding errors in the future, though, as Tesla begins to make millions of compact cars per year and even more millions of its robotaxi and sub-compact car.

Tesla will produce 1 million vehicles in a month in the future. It's possible that Tesla could get to 1 million vehicles produced every 2 to 3 weeks in the future, as all of its compact and robotaxi vehicles are ramped worldwide.

Tesla is still a very young company!

6 million vehicles is also important because it means most of those 6 million vehicles can run FSD and potentially have customers that use FSD, which will increase Tesla's profit and data lead.

This will boost Tesla and increase the quality of its data used for FSD, which will improve FSD overall.

The "take rate" of FSD for Tesla's existing vehicle fleet will be the thing to watch as this year goes on. Right now, it's around 10% or so...
