Elon Musk: "Let's Not Forget the White House Giving Tesla the Cold Shoulder" And Crediting GM With "Leading the Electric Car Revolution" When They Only Delivered 26 EVs

Elon Musk stated that the White House gave Tesla the cold shoulder and credited GM with leading the EV revolution when GM only delivered 26 EVs to Tesla's 300,000.

The White House Gave Tesla the Cold Shoulder

Merry Christmas, TorqueNews.com readers!

Life has never really been fair for Tesla. It's been an uphill battle against all odds to compete against the more than a century old technology of the internal combustion engine, unions, and even the U.S. Presidency itself. Fortunately, Tesla is a very efficient and productive company and doesn't need White House support.

Recently, Elon Musk sent out a Tweet that said:

Let’s not forget the White House giving Tesla the cold shoulder, excluding us from the EV summit and crediting GM with “leading the electric car revolution” in the same quarter that they delivered 26 electric cars (not a typo) and Tesla delivered 300 thousand.

Elon Musk certainly seems to be under fire constantly - from short sellers and those critical of Tesla and Elon's Tweets. Supposedly, Federal Agencies are going after Elon Musk for a variety of reasons, including his small glass house.

They even cancelled an $885 million dollar contract with Starlink, which doesn't make a lot of sense to me, considering Starlink is the best option for rural Internet service and is difficult to take down.

Many are critical of Elon Musk, and when someone has reached the position he has, this is going to be a natural occurrence. You cannot lead multiple disruptive companies like him while saying whatever you want and not have people become critical of you.

What Was the Reason The White House Snubbed Tesla?

I think the reason the White House has generally snubbed Tesla is because the President is largely in favor with and supportive - and supported by the unions of the legacy automakers making gasoline cars.

It all comes down to incentive. If the President gets votes by supporting unions, as well as money, then it behooves him to generally not mention or be supportive of something that is in opposition to this - Tesla.

Instead, his incentive is to support Unions and those car companies that have them, like GM, thus the President will say that GM lead the electric car revolution even though they produced 26 EVs compared to Tesla's 300,000.

The good news for Tesla is that even though they are fighting an uphill battle, they still don't need any funding from the U.S. government and due to the technology cost decline curves, EVs will easily overtake gasoline cars by the time the compact car reaches volume production and the end of the decade arrives.

The ICE car is dead, with little innovation over the last 50 years, and the EV, which as an exponential technology curve with batteries, CPUs, and software, including autonomous driving, is going to take its place.

Some day, there will likely come a new technology that makes the EV look like the dying gasoline car today, but I am not sure what that technology is or when it will arrive.

Considering that Musk is the richest man in the world, he sure does whine a lot. But regarding this specific bit of whining, it is fair to note that Tesla has not gotten to where it is today without a lot of government support -- the most obvious example is the $7500 tax credits that have helped make their vehicles more affordable versus many of their competitors. Then there is also the fact that there were several years when selling carbon credits helped keep Tesla afloat.

And I certainly can't see any evidence to suggest that President Biden's snub of Tesla hurt the company in any way. On the other hand, it does seem probable that some of Musk's own comments have done damage to Tesla's reputation.

"the most obvious example is the $7500 tax credits that have helped make their vehicles more affordable versus many of their competitors"

Ironically, this is precisely the opposite of what happened. The government provided the $7500 EV tax credit for most of their competitors, but NOT for Tesla or (later) GM, from 2019 until 2023.

During this period of NO tax credits, Tesla introduced the Model Y that became the best-selling vehicle of ANY type in the world, sales of their other vehicles grew dramatically, they became the most valuable car company in the world, and their stock split.

It's disappointing to see people still falsely claiming that the incentive available for every automaker but Tesla and (later) GM somehow is the secret of Tesla's remarkable success.

We have this thing called the internet and if you could disconnect your mouth from elons butthole you could use it to fact check.

General Motors EV1 is an electric car produced and leased by General Motors from 1996 to 1999.[6] It was the first mass-produced and purpose-designed electric vehicle of the modern era from a major automaker and the first GM car designed to be an electric vehicle from the outset. And it was 1000 units. Noone adopted it at the time because gas was cheaper than electricity. They lead the way 20+ years before tesla.

Tesla does indeed get a lot of negative comment from the media, but then Tesla does not advertise. How does the media make money? Advertising. Let's consider this for a moment. Would the attitude of the media change if Tesla bought advertising? (Don't tell me about the firewall between advertising and editorial. That's often a myth.) If the attitude did change, then.... Well, let's play with that for a moment. The subtext of what the media seems to be saying is: "Buy advertising and we'll be nicer to you." How does that differ from the old mafia protection racket? "Nice place you got here. It would be a shame if it burned down. Pay us for protection and it won't burn." The media, to me, seems to be playing the same sort of extortion game. Tesla, however, doesn't seem to feel the need to play along.

Give me a break. I love EVs. And I support Tesla as a whole. But I’m done with all the temper tantrums from this billionaire baby. Talk about biting the hand that feeds you - Elon/Tesla/SpaceX etc. have benefitted from BILLIONS of dollars in public funding. From federal, state & local subsidies, loans, tax abatements, contracts and grants this guy is one of the biggest corporate welfare bums this country has seen since the railroads and the Guilded Age.
And that’s not even counting all the publicly funded charging stations and electrical grid upgrades we’re all footing the bill for.
You can’t spell Musk without U.S.

Tesla is an odd poster boy for subsidies considering that all their government help adds up to less than $3 billion - while Ford has taken $40 billion and GM $60 billion in subsidies and taxpayer loans over the last 20 years.

Plus, those subsidy amounts for Ford and GM amount to more than half their entire market value. Meaning that Ford and GM would have collapsed years ago without government support.

But Tesla's $3 billion isn't even 1% of their market value. Tesla is the ONLY American auto maker that doesn't need taxpayer help.

This is such an easy and ridiculously convenient cop out.
The logic doesn’t even work . If media was really concerned about Tesla advertising dollars they would demand writers be nice and play to Elon’s ridiculous ego.

I agree with Elon Musk. He is an innovator and disrupter. Despite all odds he has changed the world. I drive a Tesla and a Plug in BMW. Despite the faults of both they are excellent cars and so will never go back to IC cars. It makes no sense environmentally and practically. I spend ¼ of what I did with an IC for fuel and maintenance. $500 last 12 months for electricity (12000 miles) and zero maintenance. Oh I did buy windshield wipers at $30. They drive well have incredible technology.
People who don’t own EVs don’t get it. Once you own one, and experience to revolution you will understand.
Range anxiety is ridiculous. Most states will catch up to California in a while. I live in Nevada.

This article wants us to believe that the government is against Elon? what a joke! Media out to get him it’s more like he’s has something mental against advertisers, just look no further than the interview with cnbc where he told advertisers he doesn’t care if they advertise on x…he’s more concerned spreading his thoughts on twitter… Confucius say fool, and his money soon part. I’m waiting.

P.s. TESLA’S TERRIBLE TRACK RECORDS FOR CARS

Elon first mistake was the purchase of Twitter. I stated he was going to loose his az. What a dumb move but that's a display of his arrogance. Secondly his lies and deception of Tesla vehicles. But the good part is he has put so many people against EVs. I can't wait for him to loose everything and file for bankruptcy

One cannot compensate for raw hatred and a total disregard for hard facts in giving comments by EV haters. Best to disregard these comments altogether.

Mr anonymous Datman probably believes in a flat earth, spacex is hoax never launched anything , optimus is a fraud, neurolink is a phantasy and boring co is boring holes in the sky.

The ICE car is dead....

So tired of lazy, dumb comments like this. Everyone throwing around crazy absolutes and exaggerations makes them lose their meaning. Learn to write truthfully and accurately. "It's the best", "never again", "worst ever", "it's dead", etc etc. They don't mean what they are supposed to anymore because people like this author abuse them. Talk about pathetic and embarrassing.

Captnshrms (not verified) December 27, 2023 - 1:12AM

Tesla gets 3 billion in government subsidies. And Elon is crying the white house doesn't give him enough credit 🙄

Will (not verified) December 27, 2023 - 10:54AM

LMAO @ "the ICE car is dead". Show me and EV that can drive 1800 miles in under 2 days.

ICE is still king, and will be world-wide until after you die. Especially while smooth brains continue to block nuclear power.

Oilman (not verified) December 27, 2023 - 1:57PM

Whoever wrote this doesn't have a real job. Combustion engines do all the real work on this Earth. It's nice to play pretend that your battery car gets you to the coffee shop, but real men have to use diesel to perform the tasks that keep you fed and clothed and housed with water and electricity. Maybe someday in magical fairy land electronic cars will be the better option, but not for a long time.

Jim (not verified) December 28, 2023 - 6:22AM

GM did a EV years before Tesla, believe it was EV1. There is a movie about it who killed the electric car. They were mainly leased and when the lease was up ALL were scrapped. There is only a small handful left all the controllers had a hole drilled through the circuit boards so they couldn't be repaired.

Dave (not verified) December 28, 2023 - 7:53AM

You sound extremely biased. You're riding Elon so hard that he's in your throat from your rectum. I don't support ICE engines but to claim that they're dead and that the EV industry isn't stagnant currently is very disingenuous.

To claim they haven't had ANY technological innovations in 50 years is just dishonest. Compare LITERALLY ANY CAR from 1970 to 2020 and then say there have been no innovations..

He definitely needs government funds and subsidization to survive

Unions are good for the people, to mention unions and the office of the presidency supporting them like they're a bad thing is also very disconnected from the reality of the workforce currently.

You are a terrible writer and you are misleading the public. Please do better

Rick (not verified) December 28, 2023 - 11:01AM

Tesla was built on subsidies when they sold their credits to others.

Trump branded EV's as evil in his latest rant. The oil industry doesn't want more EV's. Any Republican administration is likely to do their best to hinder EV adoption.
