Newly Redesigned WRX/STI Breaks Cover at NAIAS; What’s Not New for the Performance Models?

The 2018 Subaru WRX and WRX STI were unveiled at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit. What’s new for the performance models?

The 2018 Subaru WRX and WRX STI performance cars aren’t due for a complete remodel yet, but they do get significant upgrades over the 2017 model year. They come with enhanced performance, updated exterior design, and new interior features. Fans at NAIAS, which runs from January 8-22, will get to see both new 2018 models for the first time.

The WRX STI stays with the same 2.5-liter 305hp power plant and the WRX keeps the 2.0-liter with 268hp. There are no changes under the hood of the STI which is disappointing to many fans. But the STI gets all-new six-piston Brembo brakes, 19-inch alloy wheels, and an upgraded, more responsive Driver Controlled Center Differential (DCCD).

Interior highlights include upgrades like new available Recaro performance seats, on select WRX/STI models, which are new to the performance line. Both models also feature new available LED Steering Responsive Headlights. You can get a complete list of all the new 2018 WRX/STI features here.

Subaru brings their two performance-oriented offerings to the North American International Auto Show in Detroit to show off their latest new hardware. Fans would like to see more performance upgrades under the hood of the STI, but this is a refresh for the model and more is coming in 2020. Stay tuned.
