How The Outback Is Outperforming The Forester And Crosstrek Right Now

The Subaru Outback is still the best-performing Subaru model among new model shoppers online. See how far ahead of the other Subaru models it is now.

What is the most popular Subaru SUV now? According to a new report from Edmunds' online research tools, it's the 2024 Subaru Outback midsize SUV. I cover Edmunds' new most popular models ranking monthly to give shoppers an idea of which Subaru models are hot and which are not.

Here's a ranking from the Edmunds March report. The Outback is the most popular, followed by the all-new Solterra EV, Subaru Forester compact SUV, and the redesigned Crosstrek subcompact SUV.

Where Are Subaru Models Compared with the Other Most Popular?

  • #15 Outback

  • #28 Forester
  • #29 Crosstrek

As you can see from Edmund's list, Subaru doesn't have any models in the top ten. However, all of the Subaru models on the top 30 list are SUVs, including the Ascent 3-Row SUV.

The Subaru Impreza compact hatch, WRX sports car, BRZ sport coupe, and Legacy midsize sedan are not listed.

Why Are Subaru SUVs Ranked High with Shoppers?

Subaru vehicles, such as the Outback, Forester, Crosstrek, and Solterra, are the most shopped for four reasons.

1. Affordability

Subaru is known to be a value brand. Except for the Solterra, the Forester, Crosstrek, and Outback base models are priced at or under $30,000.

2. All-Wheel-Drive

All Subaru models, except the rear-drive BRZ, come standard with the automaker's Symmetrical all-wheel drive. Subaru has used this technology for over fifty years and continues refining it.

3. Fun-To-Drive

It's not discussed much, but Subaru vehicles are fun to drive. Because the Boxer engine sits low in the chase, they have a better center of gravity, and this improves driving dynamics.

4. Safety Scores

Even after the IIHS's new stricter testing, the Outback, Ascent, Solterra, and Impreza get the highest safety scores in the industry. However, all Subaru vehicles come with EyeSight driver-assist safety technology.

What does the IIHS say?

IIHS President David Harkey says, This year’s winners are true standouts, offering the highest level of protection for both vehicle occupants and other vulnerable road users.
