Chevrolet Performance debuts the custom Tony Stewart Camaro ZL1 at SEMA 2012

Among the sprawling Chevrolet Performance display at this week’s SEMA Show in Las Vegas were a pair of Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 models with a coupe designed for NASCAR driver Tony Stewart and a convertible designed in the tradition of the European grand touring sports cars that appropriately wears the “Touring” trimline designation.

Tony Stewart is a three time NASCAR Sprint Cup champion who also happens to be a major player in the GM high performance enthusiast community so it made good sense for the folks at Chevrolet Performance to team up with the popular driver nicknamed “Smoke” for this year’s SEMA Show in Las Vegas. The result was a car that shows the incredible performance capabilities of the Camaro ZL1 super muscle car with an interior and exterior design that reflects Stewart’s personality.

On the outside, Tony Stewart’s Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 has been painted in a deep Grey Metallic paint and clad in a tribal “smoke” design featuring a Flat Red Tricoat body with matte silver striping around the outer edges. This tribal design begins on the front fascia and spreads around to the sides of the ZL1, reaching back to the rear quarter panels. There is an additional matte red tribal design on the center panel between the tail lights while the hood, roof, trunk lid, rear spoiler and lower body bits (chin spoiler, side skirts, rear splitter) are painted a contrasting matte Carbon Flash. A set of custom painted 20 inch ZL1 wheels wear Piano Black inners with Sonic Boom Red trim around the outer edges set off the exterior design while the “Smoke” logo on the front bumper leaves no mistake as to whose ZL1 this might be. Finally, a set of smoked headlight lenses are added with red halo trim lighting which serves to add that extra touch of sinister coolness. This unique ZL1 also features the standard model and trimline badging from the production ZL1 coupes along with the exposed carbon fiber “Mohawk” in the middle of the ZL1 hood.

Inside, the Tony Stewart Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 Coupe sports embroidered Tony Stewart signatures on the seats, a suede leather instrument panel and door panel inserts, Jet Black leather armrests on the doors with French stitching and white piping, a Jet Black suede leather wrapped steering wheel with scarlet red accent stitching and Piano Black trim plates with a matching gauge cluster bezel.

Shy of the painted wheels wrapped in Goodyear Eagle F1 Supercar tires measuring 285/35/20 up front and 305/35/20 out back, the Tony Stewart Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 doesn’t feature any sort of performance oriented modifications but with 580 horsepower and 556lb-ft of torque, this super muscle car is able to move out from 0-60 in under 4 seconds en route to a top speed of 184 miles per hour. This car is capable of running the quarter mile in the high 11 second range while also lapping the famous Nürburgring in just 7 minutes and 41 seconds – making it the fastest American muscle car to lap “the ‘Ring”. This is achieved by General Motors’ LSA 6.2L supercharged V8, a close ratio and track tuned 6-speed manual transmission and the ZL1-tuned Performance Suspension System with GM’s 3rd generation Magnetic Ride Control setup.

This car first debuted to a select group of VIPs invited to a private event this past Monday with the help of Mr. Tony Stewart himself (shown in the large image on the right – ignore the wrinkled up flooring) while also serving as one of the main attractions at the Chevrolet Performance display at the 2012 SEMA Show all week long in the Las Vegas Convention Center.
