A small recall of a production series of the 2014 Nissan Rogue is underway for a steering issue that involves a misplaced bolt.

Nissan is recalling about 1,644 Rogue crossovers built between January 10 and January 17, 2014 due to an error in the bolts issued for a part of the steering assembly. The problem could result in the steering failing and loss of vehicle control.

In cooperation with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Nissan will recall the affected Rogues and inspect bolts used and replace as necessary. The issue involves only a few days of production and only one specific production line, which appears to have had the wrong bolts on hand for the assembly of the upper steering assembly.

According to the NHTSA's summary of the problem, an incorrect type of bolt was used to connect the intermediate shaft to the upper steering assembly. The misplaced bolt could rattle loose and fall out, disconnecting the shaft and disabling steering control.

No reports of steering failure, accidents or injuries have been reported in conjunction with this problem and it was found during an internal audit of the 2014 Rogue.

Recall notices will be sent to affected owners and a stop-sale notice has been sent to dealerships with affected vehicles in their inventory. Nissan dealers will inspect the steering-column assembly. If an incorrect bolt is located, the dealer will remove and reassemble the steering-column assembly using the correct bolt. The recall is expected to begin by the end of June.
