There was a point in time where the “supercar” was the most powerful production car in the world but in offering supercar-crushing vehicles, Koenigsegg has helped to invent the hypercar and when the Geneva Motor Show opened today, the world was introduced to the latest chapter in the battle for the world’s most powerful car – the Koenigsegg Agera R.

The Koenigsegg Agera R builds on the incredible Agera, starting with the carbon fiber monocoque that is so strong, a roof isn’t needed to add structural strength – allowing Koenigsegg to make this new hypercar a topless wonder. The Agera R features familiar company styling with every aspect of the car designed to focus as much on function as they do on form. Even the spoke design of the Agera R’s wheels are designed with airflow in mind, as the Vortex Generating Rim technology allows the wheels to create more downforce at higher speeds. These high tech wheels are wrapped in Michelin tires developed specifically for the Agera R, offering the highest speed rating ever offered on any production car in the world – 260 miles per hour.

The exterior of the Koenigsegg Agera R is incredible, both in functionality and in form, but the real news is the drivetrain. The original Agera shocked the world with an impressive 910 horsepower but the Agera R simply destroys its predecessor with an unbelievable 1,115 horsepower and 885 lb-ft of torque when the bi-turbo 5.0L V8 is running on E85. Even should you opt to run your Agera R on gasoline, the boosted V8 will still churn out 940 horses and 811 lb-ft of torque so no matter what fuel you use, the Agera R is one of the most powerful cars ever sold. All of this power is funneled through a 7-speed dual clutch transmission controlled by wheel-mounted paddle shifters to the rear wheels, rocketing the Agera R from 0-62mph is just 2.9 seconds and getting from a stop to 124mph takes just 7.5 seconds. Should you go from 0 to 124 miles per hour and back down to a dead stop, the Agera R will only take about 12.7 seconds throughout the entire process – a number that is nearly unrivaled across the auto industry.

The one key figure that is never mentioned is the price but you can be sure that owning the world’s newest hypercar won’t be cheap - considering that the original Koenigsegg Agera came with a price tag in the area of $2.1 million and the R version is enhanced quite a bit over the first Agera. The new Agera R is so exclusive that the car featured at the 2011 Geneva Motor Show was a privately owned model, sporting a “speed racer” looking paint scheme upon the private owner’s request.
